Men’s Soccer Nets Two but Falls Short at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College men's soccer team came up short at Simpson on Tuesday evening, fall 4-2 to the Storm at Buxton Stadium. Simpson opened the scoring in the 15th minute but Mac Buckley scored for Coe in the 24th to tie the score at one. The Storm regained the advantage in the 39th minute but the Kohawks refused to roll over, tying the game at two before the break on a goal from Andrew Russell. Simpson notched the first goal of the second half, striking in the 61st minute to regain the lead as the Storm added a fourth in the 72nd minute to end the scoring. The loss drops the Kohawks to 0-5 overall and in the A-R-C while Simpson improves to 3-1-1 on the season.

Simpson had the first chance in the game, earning a corner kick in the third minute of the game but Brayden Koch made an important save, which kept it 0-0. Just a few minutes later, the Storm had another opportunity which Koch again saved to keep it level. Simpson broke through in the 15th minute, as Justin Gilmour scored off an assist from Mateaus Lewis. The lead did not last long as Coe put together a strong period, tallying two shots over the next four minutes, one of which the Storm keeper saved while the other hit the woodwork. The Kohawks finally broke through in the 24th minute when Buckler converted his second goal of the season to knot the game at one. The game began to open up for the next few minutes, with both teams recording shots but the Storm regained the lead in the 39th minute on a goal from Peter Gaspari. Again, Coe showed resilience, tallying three shots in the final five minutes of the half including the game-tying goal from Russell in the 44th minute.

Coe came out of the break on front foot, recording three shots in the first six-plus minutes to just one for Simpson. Despite the possession and opportunities the Kohawks had, the Storm would retake the lead in the 61st minute and later add a fourth in the 72nd. Coe continued to try to create offense for the final 15+ minutes of action but the Storm were strong at the back and locked up the victory.

Up next: Coe will be back at Clark Field on Friday evening for an American Rivers Conference matchup with Loras at 7:30 p.m.
