Men’s Soccer Falls in Final Moments to Wartburg

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's soccer team fell to a late winner against Wartburg on Saturday evening, as the Knights scored in the 87th minute to pull-off the victory. The Kohawks and Knights played a back-and-forth game which featured opportunities for both teams. Coe fell behind early in the second half and fought back to tie the score in the 85th minute as Mac Buckley scored his first goal of the season. Despite the Kohawk goal, Wartburg created another chance before the whistle and it managed to find the late winner. The loss drops the Kohawks to 0-3 overall and in the A-R-C while Wartburg improves to 2-1 overall and in the league.
 
Both teams grew into the game early on, with neither squad tallying a shot on net in the opening ten minutes. The Knights recorded the first shot on target in the 14th minute of the game but Coe keeper Brayden Koch was up to the challenge and kept the score tied. The Kohawks, who looked to build out from the back against the Knights, put together a strong spell in the opening half but it remained scoreless after 45 minutes.
 
Wartburg opened the second half on the front foot, racking up three shots and one corner kick in the opening 10 minutes. The Knights broke through in the 57th minute from a corner kick as Payton Chapman's ball was headed in by Ratzer War. The Kohawks tied the game in the dying stages, striking in the 85th minute as Mac Buckley scored off an assist from Connor Fitch. Fitch started the move and drove to the left flank to find Buckley in the box who finished the chance. Wartburg then scored in the 87th minute from a set piece as Chapman again found a teammates head which proved to be the winner. 
 
Up next: Coe will be back in action on Wednesday, April 7 when it travels to Decorah for an A-R-C matchup with Luther College at 7:30 p.m.
