Women's Soccer Opens Season with Draw vs. St. Olaf

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's soccer team opened its 2021 campaign with a 1-1 draw against St. Olaf on Wednesday afternoon. The Kohawks kicked off the scoring in the second minute thanks to Lauren Dufoe, who converted a penalty kick after drawing a foul inside the 18. The Oles scored late in the first half, evening the game at the break, but neither team managed to find a winner in the second half and overtime. The result is Coe's first draw since the 2019 season when it tied with Simpson 2-2.

Coe opened the game on the front foot, creating an early opportunity in the Ole box. Dufoe received a pass from a teammate inside the 18 and was brought down by a St. Olaf player, resulting in the early penalty chance for the Kohawks. Dufoe, who earned the spot-kick, calmly stepped up and buried the opening goal just two minutes into the game. The action slowed down after the goal as both teams settled into the game until the Oles recorded its first shot at the nine-minute mark. St. Olaf recorded another shot just moments later, forcing Alex Montalbano into a save to keep it 1-0. St. Olaf got back into the contest in the 38th minute thanks to a goal from Faith Yi, who dribbled through the Kohawk defense and scored to tie the game.

Coe opened the second half with a pair of corner kicks in the first eight minutes of action but the Ole defense thwarted the Kohawk set pieces. St. Olaf then grabbed control of the game, recording four shots in just over 10 minutes to put pressure on the Coe backline. The defenders met the challenge as the Kohawks stood tough and kept the score tied at one with 15 minutes to play. Both teams began to show signs of fatigue late in the second half, but an 84th minute Ole shot attempt forced Montalbano into an important save to send the game into OT. The Kohawks and Oles each recorded two shots in the overtime periods, with both keepers making a pair of saves to secure the 1-1 draw.

Up next: The Kohawks continue the campaign this weekend on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against St. Mary's University at 1:00 P.M.
