Volleyball Outlasts UW-River Falls in Five Sets

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team took down UW-River Falls 3-2 on Friday night in its 2021 home opener at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks took the opening set 25-14 but the Falcons fought back to win back-to-back sets, earning a 2-1 advantage. Coe buckled down, winning the fourth set narrowly to force a decisive fifth set. The Kohawks found themselves down 10-6 quickly in the final set but a match-ending 9-2 run flipped the switch and Coe secured the victory. The win moves Coe to 4-2 overall while UW-River Falls drops to 3-4 on the year.

Match Facts
  • The Kohawks dominated the opening set, hitting .344 while registering three service aces in the frame. Coe also forced six errors from UW-River Falls while holding it to just a .061 attack percentage. 
  • The Falcons stormed back in the second set, forcing the Kohawks into nine attacking errors while hitting at a .250 clip. UW-River Falls also had two service aces in the set while Coe had two ball-handling errors. 
  • UW-River Falls stayed hot in the third frame, hitting .269 while racking up four total blocks. The Kohawks, who hit .000, had nine attacking errors and three service errors in the set. 
  • Coe responded in the fourth set, bouncing back with five service aces including two from Kate Tidman. The Kohawks hit just .176 in the frame but the Falcons committed seven attacking errors while posting a .158 hitting percentage. 
  • Coe and River Falls both struggled again in the final set, combining for 12 errors in the frame but the Kohawks ripped off a 9-2 spurt to clinch the match.
  • Madi Parson and Tidman led the team in kills with 15 apiece while Grace Lueken added eight in the match. Parson picked up her third double-double of the season and second-straight, posting 12 digs. 
Up next: The Kohawks continue the season tomorrow when they compete in the Cornell Classic Tournament at Kohawk Arena after a location change. Coe will play at 10 AM and 12 PM against Gustavus and Wheaton College.
