Men’s Soccer Settles for Draw Against Monmouth

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening in a non-conference match against Monmouth College. The Kohawks scored the opener in the 54th minute on a goal from Mac Buckley who netted a header to open his account for the season. The Fighting Scots tied the game just over 15 minutes later on a curling effort from Matthew Rhenals who placed it in the top corner of the Kohawk net. The result marks the second-straight game in which Coe has earned a result as it improves to 1-4-1 on the year while the Scots move to 0-1-1.

Match Facts:
  • The Kohawks and Scots felt each other out early in the opening half with neither team recording a shot until the ninth minute when Noah Abideen had a shot attempt blocked. 
  • Coe began to grow into the game at the ten-minute mark, dominating possession for the remainder of the half. Despite the flow, the Kohawks were unable to create any real scoring chances until the 37th minute when Abdi Abdi had a shot attempt from just outside the box saved. 
  • The opener came for the Kohawks after a decent spell of passing as Matthew Joseph found himself in space on the left flank and whipped in a floated ball to the back post where Buckley headed it past the keeper. 
  • Just over 15 minutes later Monmouth struck back, tallying in the 70th minute of the second half to tie the score at one. Montgomery Schroeder started the move with a powerful run down the heart of the Kohawk defense before laying it off to Matthew Rhenals who curled his shot in the top right corner past the Kohawk keeper. 
  • The Kohawks immediately got back on the attack after the equalizer, putting together a few solid chances before the end of regular time but the Fighting Scot keeper kept it tied at one. 
  • Both teams began to start showing fatigue in the overtime periods with neither team creating any true scoring chances before the referee blew his whistle for the end of the match.  
Up next: Coe returns to Clark Field on Friday evening for another non-conference match as it welcomes Illinois College at 5 p.m.
