CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Coe College volleyball team edged Loras College 3-2 in a back-and-forth match at Kohawk Arena on Tuesday evening. The Kohawks opened the match with a dominant 25-13 victory in set one but the Duhawks tied it with a 25-19 win in set two. The squads then traded points to open the fifth set, matching each other until the Kohawks edged out a 15-12 victory. Madi Parson, who finished with a career-high 25 kills in the match, had the final four kills of the fifth set. Match Facts
  • The Kohawks raced out to a 13-5 lead early in set one thanks to an excellent offensive start as they hit .500 during the stretch. Loras managed to slow the surge with a timeout but Coe had opened too large a lead for any comeback from the Duhawks as the Kohawks ended the match with back-to-back blocks.
  • Loras jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second set but the Kohawks fought back to take a 10-9 lead but the Duhawks remained calm and scored five of the next six points to regain a 14-11 lead and force a Coe timeout. Loras continued to dominate out of the break, extending its lead to 17-12 while forcing Coe to call another timeout. This time, the Kohawks responded out of the break, cutting the lead to two at 19-17. Loras buckled down with the two-point lead, scoring six of the final eight points of the set to tie the match at one.
  • Again, Loras opened an early 6-3 lead in the third set, forcing head coach DeAnn Akins to take a timeout. The Duhawks continued to stretch their advantage after the timeout, extending the lead to 9-4 but the Kohawks fought back to make it 10-9. Loras regained control of the match, using a 7-1 run to push its lead back to six points. Coe refused to go away despite the large deficit, ripping off a 10-3 spurt which included back-to-back aces from Majda Suljic. The teams exchanged points for the next few rallies as the Duhawks used two straight points to tie the score at 24. The Kohawks secured the third-set victory thanks to consecutive kills from Madi Parson, who tied the team-high with five kills in the frame.
  • Coe got in front early in set four, going up 5-2 early in the set to put pressure on Loras but the Duhawks answered and took an 8-7 lead with back-to-back points. Coe then went on its own run, using a 6-2 spurt to grab a 13-9 advantage while forcing a Loras timeout. The Duhawks continued to scrap despite the large deficit, scoring six of the next seven points to get back into the match. The run persisted for Loras after a Coe timeout as the Duhawks stormed back to claim a 23-21 lead thanks to consecutive kills from Liz Fleckenstein and Cat Gleason. Coe continued to fight for the remainder of the set forcing Loras to score back-to-back points to earn a 28-26 victory.
  • The squads traded points to open the game as the squads were tied at 11 but the Kohawks took a 13-11 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from Parson who started the set 5-of-7 on kill attempts. Loras cut the deficit to one on a kill from Lyndsi Wilgenbusch but two more kills back-to-back from Parson secured the victory for Coe.
Up next: Coe will return to tournament play this weekend as it heads to Waverly to compete in the Wartburg Invitational where it will play Augsburg, Gustavus and Carleton.
