Volleyball Defeats Augsburg, Falls to Gustavus at Wartburg Fall Invite

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday evening at the Wartburg Invitational, defeating Augsburg 3-1 in the opening match while falling 3-0 to Gustavus in the night-cap. The Kohawks lost the opening set to the Auggies to start the day but won three straight sets to secure their sixth straight victory. Coe struggled offensively in match two, registering just 28 kills overall while Gustavus attacked at a .239 clip to hand Coe the loss. With the results, Coe moves to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in American Rivers Conference play as Augsburg and Gustavus moved to 8-5 and 13-2 respectively.

Match Facts
  • Kate Tidman led the offense with 15 kills, adding eight digs, three service aces and two solo blocks. Madi Parson also registered double-digit kills, finishing with 11 kills and 17 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Gracie Urbatsch and Grace Lueken also had solid matches, adding nine and seven kills respectively. Elli Teeple directed the offense again for Coe, racking up 39 assists and zero errors. 
  • Augsburg dominated the opening set, attacking at a .375 clip while racking up 14 kills and just two errors. The Kohawks struggled to start the match, hitting just .053 with seven errors overall. 
  • The Kohawks responded in set two, racking up 15 kills in the frame while hitting .213 as a team. The Auggies also played well in set two, registering 17 kills to just six errors but the Kohawks squeaked out a 26-24 victory thanks to back-to-back points from Tidman.
  • Augsburg jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the third set, scoring five straight points to open the lead but Coe fought back to regain a one-point lead at 18-17. The Kohawks went on to score seven of the final 10 points of the frame to take a 2-1 advantage. 
  • The Kohawks would dominate the fourth and final set, posting 14 kills to just 10 for the Auggies, which also committed six errors as Coe clinched the match.
 
GUSTAVUS 3 - COE 0 
Match Facts
  • Gustavus jumped out to a quick 19-11 lead thanks to a four-point scoring stretch but the Kohawks fought back to cut the deficit to just three at 19-16. Agains, the Gusties ripped off four straight points, leading them to an opening set victory. 
  • The squads traded points back-and-forth to open the second frame but Gustavus used a five-point run at 13-12 to regain control with an 18-12 advantage. The Kohawks scored a point to stop the bleeding but five straight points for Gustavus ended all hope for Coe. 
  • The Golden Gusties opened another early lead in the third and final set, taking an 11-4 advantage. Gustavus continued to build upon its lead and then scored seven consecutive points to put the Kohawks out of reach. 
 
Up next: Coe will round out competition at the Wartburg Invitational tomorrow morning with a non-conference matchup against Carleton at 10 AM.
