Women’s Soccer Falls to Gustavus at Clark Field on Wednesday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match to Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday evening, falling 3-1 at Clark Field. The Golden Gusties got on the board in the 31st minute of the match, taking the lead thanks to a deflected shot that found the back of the net. The Kohawks equalized early in the second half on a long-distance effort from Lauren Dufoe who notched her second goal of the season. Just under ten minutes later, Gustavus regained the lead thanks to a goal from Rachel Rehnelt. The Gusties then made it 3-1 thirty seconds after play had resumed, putting the game out of reach for the Kohawks. The result drops the Kohawks to 1-6-1 overall while Gustavus improves to 4-3 on the year.

  • Gustavus started the game well, registering the first shot attempt of the game in the 3rd minute as Rachel Rehnelt fired one wide. 
  • The Kohawks saw out the pressure on D and turned it into offense as Lauren Dufoe fired a shot on goal in the 5th minute but Leah Pavlish made the stop to keep it scoreless.
  • The Golden Gusties regained control of the match around the 15-minute mark, earning a corner kick in the 18th minute while registering a shot from the set-piece. Just 15 minutes later, the Gusties found the opener as a shot attempt deflected off of a Kohawk defender and trickled into the back of the net. Neither team managed to create any true scoring opportunities prior to the end of the first half as Gustavus led 1-0 at the break. 
  • The Kohawks were on the back foot to start the second half as Alex Montalbano was forced into a save in the 48th minute. Just over five minutes later Dufoe equalized for Coe as she beat the keeper with a beautiful strike from nearly 25 yards out. 
  • Gustavus regained momentum in the match after Coe's goal, leading to the second goal of the night for the Gusties as they struck in the 62nd minute. Just under thirty seconds later, Gustavus struck again as it controlled possession after the restart and got a lobbed shot from Kristin Poppen who beat the Coe keeper from distance. 
Up next: The squad will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, September 22 when it hosts Gustavus Adolphus at Clark Field at 7 p.m.
