Football Suffers First Defeat of Season at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College football team dropped its first game of the season on Saturday at Wartburg, falling 28-7 to the Knights. The Kohawks and Knights played a low-scoring first half as the hosts converted two short field goals to take a 6-0 lead into the break but a 14-point fourth quarter for Wartburg led it past Coe. The loss is the first of the season for Coe and drops it to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the A-R-C while Wartburg improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Alphonso Soko led the offense once again for the Kohawks, rushing for 73 yards on 14 attempts for an average of 5.1 yards per touch. Coe passed for a season-low 60 yards in the game, completing just 11 passes while tossing one interception. Defensively, Trey Holub, Jay Oostendorp and Manny Lopez all finished with double-digit tackles as Holub led the group with 15 total stops. Six different Kohawks had tackles for loss as Cedric Nah had three total with two forced fumbles.

GAME FACTS
  • The Knights got on the board first after five scoreless possessions to win the game, converting a short field goal with 3:32 to play in the quarter. The Knights drove 45-yards on nine plays to get into scoring position but the Kohawk defense had the bend but don't break mentality and held them to three points.
  • The second score of the game came with 5:33 to play in the second quarter as Wartburg converted another short field goal, this time capping off a 12-play 75-yard drive to take a six-point lead into the halftime break.
  • The Kohawks sprung to life early in the third quarter, taking advantage of a Knight fumble which set them up with good field position inside the opponent 30. The Coe offense rushed four straight times and forced its way inside the endzone as Carter Maske punched it in from three yards out.
  • One possession later, Coe was set to receive a fourth-down punt from Wartburg but a fumble on the play allowed Wartburg to record, which set up the hosts inside the Coe 25. The Knights took advantage of the turnover and scored a touchdown from the one-yard line on third-and-goal while adding the two-point conversion to take a one-touchdown lead.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, Wartburg added two more touchdowns, scoring on a punt return and a pick-six to put the game out of reach for Coe.
Up next: The Kohawks will have the week off for their annual bye week before resuming competition on October 9 when they welcome Central College to Clark Field.
