Volleyball Earns Five-Set Victory at Dubuque to Remain Perfect in League Play

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team earned a five-set victory over Dubuque on Wednesday evening, defeating the Spartans 3-2 at the Stoltz Sports Center. The Kohawks fell to the Spartans 29-27 in the opening set which featured constant back-and-forth action but a victory in the second frame tied the score at one. Both teams would secure another set to force a decisive fifth as Dubuque won the third while Coe won the fourth. In the final set of the evening, the Kohawks dominated, holding the Spartans to -.043 attack percentage while hitting at a .211 clip. The victory moves Coe to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in the American Rivers Conference while Dubuque falls to 6-9 on the season and 0-3 in the league.

Match Facts
  • Four players recorded double-digit kills in the match as Kate Tidman (22), Gracie Urbatsch (16), Madi Parson (10) and Grace Lueken all had solid offensive nights. Elli Teeple and Majda Suljic were key for the Kohawk defense as the pair recorded 22 and 24 digs respectively. 
  • The squads battled for the entirety of the opening set as they were forced to play past 25 with the Spartans edging the Kohawks 29-27 in the first frame. Dubuque hit .348 in the set while registering 17 kills and just one error while Coe recorded a hitting percentage of .214 and six errors. 
  • The Kohawks battled back in the second set, earning a 25-20 victory while posting a .275 attack percentage with 13 kills. The Kohawks also had four service aces in the set including a pair from Teeple to help clinch the second frame. 
  • The Spartans and Kohawks fought hard again in the third set, going past 25 points once again as the hosts pulled out a 28-26 victory to reclaim a 2-1 lead in the match. Coe struggled offensively in the period, hitting just .174 while posting nine attacking errors. 
  • Coe dominated the fourth set to force a fifth and final frame, limiting Dubuque to .064 attack percentage and just 11 kills. The Spartans, who committed eight errors in the frame also had two service errors to help the Kohawks.
  • The Kohawks built upon their fourth-set momentum early in the final set, opening up a 7-0 lead to take complete control. Despite the large deficit, Dubuque refused to go away, clawing back to cut the lead to one at 8-7. Coe remained calm and ripped off a 7-2 scoring run to end the match with a 15-9 victory. 
Up next: Coe is back in action this weekend at the Elmhurst College Invitational where it will play four matches against Elmhurst, John Carroll, Kalamazoo and Alma on Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2.
