Second Half Rally Falls Short as Women’s Basketball Suffers Defeat at Mount Mercy

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team fell 53-42 to Mount Mercy University on Monday evening. The Kohawks scored just ten points in the first two quarters to trail the hosts 23-10 after 20 minutes. Coe battled back in the second half, cutting its deficit to five points early in the third but Mount Mercy handled the pressure to secure the victory. The loss drops Coe to 4-9 overall and 3-6 in non-conference action while Mount Mercy improves to 5-11 on the year.
 
Ellie Wisner led the offensive effort for Coe, scoring 18 points as the freshman shot 7-of-19 from the floor and 3-of-8 from downtown. Kaalyn Petersen joined her in double-figures, adding 12 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

  • Both teams started the game slowly, combining for just 10 points in the first five minutes of the contest as Mount Mercy held an early 7-3 lead. The Mustangs continued to stretch the lead for the next few minutes, scoring four-straight points to grab an 11-3 advantage with 2:20 left in the opener. The squads then traded buckets to end the first period with the hosts taking a 13-5 lead into the second quarter.
  • The offensive struggles continued in the early portion of the second but the Mustangs pushed their lead to ten points at the 4:08 mark of the period. Both teams' offensive woes lasted for the remainder of the second quarter until Mount Mercy ended the period with a 3-pointer to grab a 23-10 lead after two quarters. 
  • The Kohawks had a strong start to the third quarter, cutting their deficit to just seven points before the five-minute mark of the period. Mount Mercy called timeout to stop the run with 5:46 to play in the third but Coe got four-straight from Petersen as the sophomore made it 27-22 with 3:57 remaining in the period. The Mustangs ended the frame on top, scoring the final five points to regain control of the game as they took an 11-point lead into the final period. 
  • The Mustangs scored the opening three points of the final quarter, getting a free throw and a layup to make it 36-22 with 8:41 to play. Coe quickly made it a 10-point game after calling a timeout to stop the run but Mount Mercy managed the remainder of the contest and secured the victory over the Kohawks.
