Women’s Basketball Erases 21-Point Deficit in Comeback Victory at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team fought back from a 21-point second-quarter deficit to defeat Buena Vista 59-56 on Saturday afternoon. Despite trailing by double-digits at the break, Coe slowly got itself back into the contest, outscoring BVU 19-9 in the third. The comeback was finished off in the final period as Alyse Southard came up with a defensive steal for the Kohawks and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 59-56 with just two seconds to play. The Beavers had one final chance to tie the game but a shot attempt was denied by Kaalyn Petersen who secured the victory for Coe. The result snaps a five-game losing streak for the Kohawks as they improve to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the A-R-C while Buena Vista falls to 4-8 on the year and 2-4 in the league.

Ellie Wisner led the offensive effort again for Coe, posting 18 points while adding six boards, one assist, one block and one steal. Fellow freshman Elle Walker joined Wisner in double-figures, scoring 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Molly Buck, Alyse Southard and Kaalyn Petersen added eight, seven and six points apiece. Southard and Buck led the team with three assists and five steals respectively with Petersen chipping in with a pair of blocked shots.

Game Facts
  • The Beavers opened the scoring in the game, getting a layup with 8:30 remaining in the first period. The Kohawks bounced back with five-straight points of their own, getting a layup from Buck and 3 from Southard to take an early lead. BVU then dominated the remainder of the period, ending the frame on an 11-4 run while holding Coe to just 2-of-9 from the floor as the hosts led 13-9 after one period.
  • The run continued early in the second for Buena Vista, ripping off the first 17 points in the quarter to extend its lead to 30-9 with 5:40 left in the half. Coe showed no panic despite the long scoreless stretch, scoring the game's next nine points to quickly slash the deficit to 12 points with 1:12 to play in the second quarter. Buena Vista scored the final points of the half, getting a layup with 54 seconds remaining as the Beavers held a 32-18 lead after 20 minutes.
  • BVU again opened the scoring in the second half, getting a layup just 27 seconds into the quarter to extend its lead to 34-18. The Kohawks dominated for the next five-plus minutes of the period, ripping off a 13-1 run during which the visitors shot 4-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
  • The hosts put an end to the big run, scoring three-straight points to regain a seven-point lead but Coe ended the frame with a short 6-3 burst which cut the deficit to just four points with 10 minutes to play.
  • Both teams started the fourth quarter cold, going scoreless in the first two-plus minutes of the frame until BVU hit a big 3 with 7:51 to play. The teams then went back and forth over the next few moments of the quarter but a clutch 3 from Wisner brought Coe to within three points of the BVU advantage with 2:36 remaining. The game again went scoreless for the next two minutes until Mallory McCall split a pair of free throws for the Beavers to make it 55-51 with 19 seconds remaining. The Kohawks quickly got a layup from Buck on the next possession to cut the deficit to two before fouling McCall to send her back to the line. Again, McCall split a pair of freebies, leaving the door open for Coe with 14 seconds to play.
  • Wisner again hit a massive, game-tying 3 on Coe's next offensive trip, tying the score at 56 with eight seconds to play as BVU called timeout to draw up a last-second play. Out of the break, Southard came up with a steal on defense and ran the length of the floor to convert an old-fashioned three-point play as she put Coe ahead 59-56 with two seconds remaining. The Beavers called another timeout to draw up one final last-ditch effort but a shot attempt from BVU was blocked by Petersen as she helped secure the victory for Coe.
Up next: Coe is back in action on Wednesday, January 12 as it heads to Waverly for an A-R-C matchup with Wartburg at 5:30 PM.
