Parson’s 20 Kills Lead #21 Volleyball Past Buena Vista in Five Sets

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The #21 Coe College Volleyball team pulled out a 3-2 victory over Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena. Coe, which celebrated its seniors and player families prior to the match, took the opening set 25-19 to grab an early lead. Buena Vista responded in the second and third periods, winning 26-24 and 25-13 to flip the momentum in its favor. Coe battled in the fourth set, grinding out a 25-22 victory to force a fifth period. The Kohakws raced out to an early lead in the decisive fifth and never looked back, hitting .286 as a team in the frame en route to a 15-9 victory. Madi Parson followed up her impressive performance from Friday evening, registering a team and season-best 20 kills while hitting .245. Parson was joined in double-figures by fellow senior Kate Tidman and Grace Lueken, each recording 11 kills for Coe. The win, which gives the Kohawks at least a share of the A-R-C title, moves them to 20-5 on the season and 7-0 in the American Rivers Conference while Buena Vista falls to 10-11 and 4-3 in the league.

  • Coe was on fire in the opening set of the day, attacking at a .324 clip with just one error. The Kohawks and Beavers battled back and forth early in the frame but Coe used a 4-1 run midway through to grab a 15-11 advantage. Buena Vista answered with its own run after the break, outscoring coe 7-2 to take a lead at 18-17. Coe settled back into the set and scrapped its way to a 26-24 victory, getting a 3-1 run to end the period. 
  • Buena Vista took advantage of a pair of sloppy offensive sets from Coe in the second and third period to grab the lead and momentum. The Kohawks hit just .062 in the second period, committing seven attacking errors to allow Buena Vista to earn a 26-24 victory. The offensive woes continued in the third for the Kohawks, hitting -.025 as a team while the Beavers posted a .282 percentage. Buena Vista took a 2-1 lead in the match, claiming a dominant 25-13 victory in the third period. 
  • The Kohawks answered back in the fourth set, squeaking out a 25-22 victory to force a fifth. Coe trailed 13-11 but got a solid stretch following a timeout, outscoring the opponents 10-7 to grab a 21-20 lead. BVU called timeout with the period nearing an end but the Kohawks showed no let up and got back-to-back kills from Lueken to make it 2-2. 
  • Coe got off to another great start in the final period, scoring the first three points of the fifth. Buena answered with back-to-back points but Coe answered with two straight, forcing the visitors to call timeout. The run continued following the break with the Kohawks pushing the lead to 9-3, getting kills from Maddy Maahs and Parson and a service ace from Tidman. Buena Vista called another timeout but it only delayed the inevitable as Coe cruised to a 15-9 victory, earning a 3-2 win in the match. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks will round out A-R-C play on Wednesday, October 25 when they host Dubuque at 6 PM.
