#20 Volleyball Sweeps MSOE & Benedictine on Opening Day of Warrior Invitational

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The #20 Coe College Volleyball team opened the Wisconsin Luther Invitational on Friday evening with a pair of sweeps over MSOE and Benedictine. The Kohawks extended their winning streak to five games with the wins, improving their overall record to 23-5. The American Rivers Conference regular season champions took their opening match of the day 25-23, 25-23 and 25-12, hanging on for a pair of narrow set victories before dominating the eagles in the third and final period. The Kohawks were led by senior Madi Parson who finished with 14 kills and just two errors posting a .364 attack percentage. Coe earned another sweep in its second match of the evening, cruising to 25-14, 25-14 and 25-12 victories en route to the win. The Kohawks had a balanced attack in the second game of the day, getting kills from six different players. Maggie Furlong finished with a team-high 13 kills while Rachael Kilpatrick added eight for Coe. 
 
GAME FACTS:
#20 COE 3 - BENEDICTINE 0
  • Coe fell behind early in the match as the opposition took a 4-1 advantage thanks to a three-point stretch. The Kohawks clawed back, getting a three-point run of their own to square the game at 11. Coe continued to click on offense, answering a single Benedictine point with a six-point run to make it 17-12. The Eagles called timeout and pulled themselves back into the set, getting within one point at 22-21. The Kohawks buckled down and secured the victory, scoring three of the final five points to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Kohawks and Eagles went back-and-forth in set two, trading short runs with each other as the score was tied at six. Coe then took control of the period, scoring nine-straight points to jump ahead 14-6. Benedictine started its comeback later in the set, using a 7-1 run spurt to get within two points of Coe's lead. The Eagles continued to rally but Coe hung on, getting the set-clinching point on a service error from the opponents. 
  • Benedictine had another strong start to the third set, getting a 4-1 lead early on. The Kohawks settled in a got back into the frame, using an 8-4 spurt to grab a one-point advantage at 9-8. Coe again ripped off another impressive stretch, scoring 11-straight points to gain a 20-9 lead in the third. Coe kept its foot on the gas pedal for the remainder of the period, cruising to the sweep with a 25-12 third-set victory.

  • The Kohawks started the match on fire, hitting .303 in the opening set to lay a marker down for the opponents. Coe used a late 8-0 stretch in the first set to take control, extending its narrow lead to nine at 22-13. Coe saw MSOE snap the run with one point to make it 22-14 but the Kohawks scored three-straight to take set one. 
  • MSOE took a significant lead in the onset of the second, grabbing a 5-3 lead. Coe again answered, using a 10-3 run to flip the script and grab a 13-8 advantage. The teams traded points over the next few rallies but Coe grabbed the momentum with a four-point stretch which made it 19-9. Coe continued to click on offense, hitting .379 in the set to earn a 25-14 win the second. 
  • The Kohawks kept things up in the third and final set, hitting .542 as a team while holding the Raiders to .148. Coe took an early 7-3 advantage and never looked back, extending the lead throughout the frame. MSOE made a late charge and pulled within seven points of Coe's lead but the Kohawks showed no panic and secured their second sweep of the night. 
Up next: The Kohawks will finish off the regular season tomorrow with a pair of non-conference matches against Wisconsin Lutheran and Elmhurst.
