Women’s Basketball Moves to 2-0, Defeats Monmouth at Kohawk Arena

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team picked up its second win is as many games on Saturday afternoon, cruising past Monmouth for a 72-46 victory at Kohawk Arena. Coe was on top from start to finish, outscoring the visitors in all four quarters. The Kohawks got off to the perfect start, grabbing a 13-7 lead after the first period and extender their margin to 18 before the end of the first half. Coe continued to cruise in the third and fourth quarters, ending the game with 41 percent from the field and 53 percent from beyond the arc. Ellie Wisner was Coe's and the game's leading scorer, finishing with 18 points on 5-of-7 from the floor. The sophomore was 3-of-4 from deep and hit all five of her free throw attempts. Kaalyn Petersen recorded her second-straight double-digit rebounding game, pulling down 10 boards to lead the team. Coe's defense was scrappy all game, forcing nine turnovers while blocking seven shots. The win moves the Kohawks to 2-0 while Monmouth falls to 0-2.

  • Coe fell behind quickly as Monmouth scored the opening points of the game from the free throw line. The Kohawks answered with a dominant run, scoring eight-straight points over the next two minutes to gain momentum. The Fighting Scots cut into the lead with a quick 3 but Coe had a strong 5-2 spurt to end the quarter with a 13-7 lead. 
  • The Kohawks amped up the pressure in the first few minutes of the second, using another strong stretch to pull away. Coe outscored Monmouth 10-2 in the first 2:54 of the period and got six points from Wisner to take a 14-point advantage. The visitors brought it back to single-digits with three straight but Coe had another answer, getting five unanswered points from Alyse Southard who hit a triple and a pair of freebies. The hosts then scored the final four points of the quarter as Wisner hit four consecutive from the line to make it 32-14. 
  • Coe quickly stretched its lead in the third, scoring the opening four points of the frame on a layup from Caydee Kirkham and free throws from Petersen. Monmouth answered with a strong stretch despite its largest deficit, outscoring Coe 12-5 over the next four minutes to pull back within 15. The Kohawks ended any further comeback thoughts with a dominant close to the quarter, scoring 12 of the final 14 points to push their lead back to 25 points with 10 minutes to play.
  • Wisner and the Kohawks started the fourth in a similar fashion, getting a quick 9-5 run to make it 62-33. Coe then traded buckets with Monmouth for the remaining five-plus minutes of the game, cruising to its second victory of the season. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks return to action on Tuesday evening for their first road game at Knox College at 6:00 PM.
