34 Second Half Points Propels Football Past Nebraska Wesleyan in Final Road Game of 2022

LINCOLN, Neb. - The (RV) Coe College football team used a dominant second-half effort on Saturday to extend its winning streak to three games, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan 34-14 in its final road game of the regular season. The Kohawks quickly fell behind, seeing the Prairie Wolves score 14 points in the opening half while keeping Coe scoreless. Coe responded with a dominant effort in the second half, outscoring the hosts 34-0 to secure its third-straight win. Carter Maske struggled in the opening two quarters but responded in the third and fourth, passing for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. Coe's defense, which entered the game 42nd in the NCAA in scoring, put together another impressive performance as the Kohawks held NWU to just 217 total yards, 129 of which came in the opening half. The win moves Coe to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the A-R-C while Nebraska Wesleyan drops to 1-8 and 0-7 in the league.

GAME FACTS:
(RV) COE 34 - NWU 14
  • Carter Maske had another excellent performance for Coe, shaking off a tough first half to dominante the second. The junior gunslinger finished 21-of-40 passing, racking up 268 yards and three touchdowns. Maske, who was sacked just once behind a dominant offensive line, connected with six different players and threw touchdown passes to three different Kohawks. Maske's long play of the game went for 36 yards late in the third quarter, connecting with Logan WInn on the first play of touchdown-scoring drive. This is the third-straight game that Maske has thrown for at least 300 yards or three touchdowns.
  • Freshman running back duo Jacob Brecht and Jarrin Sanders were stifled in the first half but broke it open in the second half, turning in a pair of solid performances in place of bellcow running back Ray Seidel. Brecht led the way with 25 carries for Coe, racking up 137 yards and one touchdown. Sanders added 15 totes and turned in 54 yards and on score. Brecht broke Coe's longest play of the game, ripping off a 44-yard sprint on the opening play of the third quarter. Sanders then cashed in for Coe's first score of the game, capping off a four-play drive that featured nothing but run plays. Brecht scored his first collegiate touchdown on Coe's next drive, tying the game with a one-yard score after Maske completed 22-yard and 10-yard passes earlier on the march.
  • Dominic Shepardson continued to dominate the receiving efforts for the Kohawks, leading the team with 121 yards and nine catches. The senior from Phoenix hit pay dirt for the sixth-straight game and has now eclipsed the century mark in three straight. Amel Saric also had a nice day for the Kohawk receiving core, catching six passes for 52 yards and a touchdown, his third of the season. Slade Huerta made headlines in the game, scoring his first Kohawk touchdown on a 26-yard strike from Maske.
  • The Kohawks defense continued its dominant 2022 season, holding NWU to just 217 total yards and 14 points. The tackling effort was led by Jack Shaw who finished with a team-high eight stops. Ben Adelsberger finished second on the team with seven stops, recording four solos and one tackle for loss. Alex Aitchison, who started the game top-10 in the nation in TFLs, added two more to his total on Saturday, finishing with three tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. On his sack, Aitchison forced his fourth fumble of the season. Brady Lyons and Stone Cummins joined Aithcison with solid performances along Coe's defensive line, registering 2.0 and 1.5 tackles for loss each. The Kohawk defense added two more interceptions in the game, bringing their season total to 15 as Jay Oostendorp and Bridger Aucutt picked off a pair of Prarie Wolf passes.
Up next: The Kohawks end the regular season next weekend with a home game against #14 Wartburg College at 1 PM. Prior to the game, the Kohawks will honor the 2022 Coe football senior class.
