Women’s Basketball Extends Streak to Six, Petersen & Harvey Lead Balanced Scoring Attack

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games on Friday afternoon, defeating Elmhurst University 72-47 at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks, who end the year with an 8-1 record in non-conference games, outscored the Bluejays in all four quarters en route to the victory. Coe shot 46.9 percent from the floor and held Elmhurst to just 33.3 percent shooting. Kaalyn Petersen reached double-figures for the third game running, leading the team with 17 points and six rebounds. Meagan Harvey was the lone other Kohawk to reach double digits, scoring 10 points for her second-straight 10-plus point performance. The win moves Coe 10-3 overall while Elmhurst drops to 2-10 on the season. 
 
GAME FACTS:

  • Coe opened the game with five unanswered points in the first three-plus minutes. Both teams settled in around the middle of the period but the Kohawks used an 8-2 run to grab control. Elmhurst stayed within touching distance over the final few minutes of the quarter, edging the hosts 6-5 to slice the deficit to eight at 18-10. Petersen dominated the opening 10 minutes, scoring nine points while going 4-of-4 from the floor. 
  • The visitors scored the opening basket in the second quarter but Coe kept up its dominance, getting a 13-0 run over the next 2:18. Ellie Wisner, Alyse Southard and Meagan Harvey all hit 3s during the run while Petersen and Southard each added a layup. The Bluejays trailed by 19 but refused to give in, getting a 6-2 spurt thanks to back-to-back 3s. Coe and Elmhurst then exchanged buckets over the final four minutes of the half, scoring eight points each as the Kohawks took a 41-26 lead into the break. 
  • Coe stayed hot in the early going of the third quarter, starting the period with a 9-5 in the first 2:35. Caydee Kirkham and Petersen drove the run, converting a pair of buckets each to put Coe up 50-31. The teams then traded points for the final five-plus minutes of the third but the hosts edged the visitors 8-6. Four different players registered buckets during the stretch including a pair of free throws from Theo Mba. The Kohawks put the game away for good in the first five minutes of the fourth, ripping off an 11-4 outburst to push the lead past 25 points.
