STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College football team opened American Rivers Conference play with a 14-3 victory at Buena Vista on Saturday evening. The Kohawks and Beavers played a scoreless opening quarter but the hosts took the first lead with just 4:52 left in the opening half, converting on a 25-yard field goal. Coe responded on the final play of the opening half, getting a 32-yard touchdown pass from
Matt Walton who connected with
Amel Saric for the lead. The low-scoring affair continued in the second half with Coe scoring the only points of the period on a two-yard plunge from
Ray Seidel, who sealed the victory for the Kohawks late in the third quarter. Offensively, Coe racked up 330 total yards including 146 on the ground. The Kohawks allowed just 304 yards on defense, forcing a pair of turnovers while holding the Beavers to a season-low three points. The win moves Coe to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in A-R-C play while BVU drops to 1-2 and 0-1 in the league.

- Matt Walton and Nick Casey split the quarterbacking duties, with Walton pacing the efforts. The Anamosa native was 14-of-30 passing, totaling 132 yards and one touchdown. Casey completed 5 of his 13 attempts, racking up 52 yards for the Kohawks.
- Trenton Barnes and Ray Seidel led a two-headed ground attack for the visitors, posting 72 and 66 yards respectively. Each back had an average of over 3.5 yards while Seidel punched in one of Coe's two touchdowns on the evening.
- Amel Saric was the leading receiving for the Kohawks, racking up a team-high eight catches for 90 yards. The senior from Waterloo was on the receiving end of Walton's 32-yard touchdown late in the first half. Saric rose above a Beaver defender in the endzone and high-pointed the ball, making a juggling catch to give the Kohawks a 7-3 lead.
- Ben Adelsberger had a standout performance for the Kohawk defense, leading the team with seven tackles in the game. Adelsberger also made a few key plays, registering a pair of TFLs and one of Coe's two interceptions. Fellow lineback Jay Oostendorp was second on the team in tackles, finishing the game with six stops and 0.5 TFLs. Jack Shaw, Bridger Aucutt and LaDainian Linnear complemented the two linebackers, adding five tackles each while Linnear added a pair of pass breakups. Trey Holub came up with Coe's other interception, returning a second-quarter pick inside BVU territory to set up Coe's first touchdown.
- Julian Garcia Ayala was 2-of-2 on extra point attempts for the Kohawks and added one touchback on kickoff duty. Chase Kruse handled the punting responsibilities for Coe, totaling 171 yards on five kicks for an average of 34.2 yards. The junior pinned the Beavers inside their own 20 twice and had a long punt of 46 yards.
