CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team routed Simpson on Saturday in its A-R-C home opener, defeating the visitors 48-10 at Clark Field. The Kohawks cashed in on their second drive of the day, starting the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run from
Trenton Barnes. The game went quiet for the final few minutes of the quarter but Simpson got on the board early in the second with a 37-yard field goal. The Kohawk offense then came to life, scoring 21 unanswered points before the end of the half to grab a 28-3 lead. During the run, junior quarterback
Carter Maske tossed a pair of touchdowns to freshman
Zamari Bruce and one to
Dominic Shepardson. The hosts continued to dominate in the second half, scoring 20-straight points including a 94-yard kick return touchdown from
LaDainian Linnear, putting the contest out of reach. The win moves Coe to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the A-R-C while Simpson drops to 0-3 and 0-1 in league play.

COE 48 - SIMPSON 10
- Carter Maske got his first start of the season and came up big for Coe, tossing for 187 yards and three scores. The junior connected with five different receivers and threw just four incompletions on the afternoon.
- Trenton Barnes handled a majority of the running work early in the game for Coe, racking up 56 yards on just nine carries. Ray Seidel also saw nine totes on the day, converting them into 22 yards and two touchdowns for the Kohawks. Jarin Sanders was effective in clean-up duty, rushing 10 times for 57 yards including a long run of 22.
- Zamari Bruce had a breakout game on the outside for Coe, hauling in three passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Dominic Shepardson also contributed to the offense, catching four balls for 44-yards and one score.
- Jack Shaw was the leading tackler for the defense, finishing the game with four solo stops and three assists. Jay Oostendorp, who had a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss, was second with six total stops for the defense. As a team, Coe had six sacks and 13 TFLs, with 11 different players recording at least .5. The defense, which entered today's game second in the NCAA in takeaways, only came up with one turnover as Darrius Saunders forced a fumble that was recovered by Jon Bell late in the second quarter.
- Julian Ayala Garcia was 2-of-2 on extra point attempts for the Kohawks and added one touchback on kickoff duty. Chase Kruse handled the punting responsibilities for Coe, totaling 171 yards on five kicks for an average of 34.2 yards. The junior pinned the Beavers inside their own 20 twice and had a long punt of 46 yards.
Up next: The Kohawks will take the week off for their bye and return to action in two weekends when they travel to Decorah for an A-R-C matchup with Luther College at 1 PM.
