Wartburg Takes Down Women’s Basketball to Snap Eight-Game Streak

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday evening, falling 78-58 to league-leading Wartburg at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks and Knights played a tightly-contested opening quarter but Coe managed a one-point lead ten minutes in. Wartburg exploded in the second quarter and never looked back, outscoring Coe 27-11 to grab a 15-point advantage with two periods gone. The Knights controlled the remainder of the game, outscoring Coe in the third period while matching the hosts in the final quarter. In the loss, the Kohawks were led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Caydee Kirkham and Alyse Southard who scored 15 and 13 respectively. The result Coe drops to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the A-R-C while Wartburg improves to 11-4 and 6-0 in the league.

  • Coe got off to a great start in the opening minute, getting a pair of layups from Kaalyn Petersen and Katie Wilhelmi before Wartburg got on the board. The Knights then answered with six-straight points, getting a layup and two trips to the free throw line, where they converted all four tries. The hosts then ripped off an 8-4 spurt, getting four points along the way from Kirkham who helped put Coe ahead 12-10. Coe edged Wartburg 4-3 over the final 2:11 of the period, grabbing a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Wartburg dominated the second quarter, opening with five unanswered points in the opening two minutes to grab a four-point advantage. Coe quickly responded, scoring back-to-back buckets during the next minute to tie the contest at 19. The Knights then took control with just over six minutes left in the half, ending the period on a 22-7 run. During the run, the Knights shot 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond while holding Coe to just 2-of-10 shooting. 
  • The Knights continued to control the game early in the third, scoring the first 11 points of the period to extend the lead to 26 points. Coe battled back during the next three-plus minutes, getting a 10-1 scoring run to cut the lead to under 20 with four minutes left in the third. Wartburg put Coe away for good before the end of the quarter, answering with a 10-0 spurt to regain a 20-plus point advantage. The Kohawks hung tough over the final 10 minutes of the game, outscoring the Knights 22-15 to finish the game on a high note. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks will break for a week and return to action on Wednesday, January 18, heading to Lincoln to face Nebraska Wesleyan at 5:30 PM.
