Volleyball knocks off UD for second-straight A-R-C Postseason Title

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team won its second consecutive American Rivers Conference postseason title on Saturday evening, defeating top-seeded Dubuque 3-1 in the championship match. Coe fell behind quickly in the contest, spotting the Spartans a 1-0 lead as UD edged Coe 25-21 in the opener. The Kohawks responded with back-to-back dominant wins in the second and third sets, earning 25-16 and 25-14 victories to put themselves firmly in the driver's seat. Coe and UD traded blows in the fourth and final set, each grabbing multi-point leads throughout the period. The Spartans trailed by three late in the set but fought back with four-straight points, knotting the game at 22. Coe hung tough and sealed the deal with three points in the final four, edging the top seed 25-23 for a 3-1 victory. Madi Parson, Maggie Furlong and Grace Lueken all posted double-digit kill efforts for Coe in the win, finishing with 17, 16 and 12 kills respectively. As a team, Coe hit .236, committing just 18 errors in 157 attack attempts.

  • The Kohawks struggled in the opening period, hitting just .152 while committing six attacking errors. The Spartans took advantage of the early miscues and took a 1-0 lead, defeating Coe 25-21 in the period. Coe responded with an impressive attacking display in the second, hitting .324 with 13 kills and just one error in a 25-16 victory. The momentum swung further into's Coe's favor in the third, earning another emphatic win, this time 25-14. Coe hit .273 in the frame and took advantage of Dubuque's attacking inability, hitting just .118 with five errors. Coe and UD went toe-to-toe in the final frame, each hitting just over .200. The Kohawks slightly edged the Spartans with 15 kills, securing the league title with a 25-23 victory in the fourth period.
