PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team got a pair of 20-point performances from
Caydee Kirkham and
Kaalyn Petersen on Saturday afternoon, propelling the Kohawks to their second-straight win in a 65-63 victory over Central College. The formidable duo combined for 44 of Coe's 65 points in the contest, hitting eight field goals each while helping erase a late three-point deficit in the fourth quarter. The Kohawks trailed 58-55 with 3:07 to play but Petersen scored four straight to give her a team a one-point advantage before Kirkham converted four free throws in a row in the final seconds. Central tied the game on a last-ditch 3 with 12 seconds to go but Coe secured the victory moments later as Petersen and Kirkham each hit a free throw to make it 65-63 with only two seconds to play. Kirkham, who finished with 24 points, added five boards and four assists. Petersen posted a new season-high with 20 points and recorded her second-straight double-double in the game and fourth overall of 2023-24, securing 10 boards.

- Coe and Central traded punches in the early going of the contest. The visitors eliminated an early four-point deficit with 12 unanswered points to lead 15-7 with 1:22 left in the opening quarter. The Dutch hung around despite the big run from Coe, hitting a pair of 3s before the end of the quarter to trail by just five after one. The Dutch flipped the score quickly in the second period, outscoring Coe 12-6 in the first five minutes to grab a 25-24 lead. Coe edged the hosts in the closing minutes of the quarter, grabbing a narrow 30-29 lead at the break with six of the final 10 points. The back-and-forth action continued for the third quarter. Each team traded quick runs with Central taking a five-point lead midway only for Coe to answer with a strong close to the period which saw it grab a 46-44 lead heading into the final frame. Central scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to grab a two-possession lead but again Coe had an answer, ripping off a 9-5 run to lead by three with 5:52 to play. The squads struggled to find the mark in the final minutes of the game but Coe managed to secure the road victory, getting an impressive closing stretch from Kirkham and Petersen for its second win in a row.
