Kirkham’s second-career double-double pushes women’s basketball past Cornell

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season over local-rival Cornell College on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, defeating the Rams 63-41. The Kohawks cruised to the season sweep, leading for all but four minutes early in the contest. The hosts shot 42.3 percent from the floor and tied their season-high with 11 3s, shooting 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. Caydee Kirkham was the catalyst for a balanced offensive attack from Coe, recording her second-career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while adding two assists and two steals. Katie Wilhelmi was Coe's other double-digit scorer, finishing with 10 points, two boards and an assist. In total, 11 different players recorded points with 10 scoring three or more points.

GAME FACTS
  • Cornell began with five unanswered points in the opening quarter as both teams struggled to find the mark early on. The Kohawks responded midway through the period, using an 8-2 run to take their first lead at 8-7 with 3:14 left in the first. Cornell kept it close for the next few minutes, trading buckets with Coe but an 8-0 quarter-ending spell gave the Kohawks a 19-11 lead after one. Coe dominated the second quarter, holding Cornell to just four points in the period while extending its lead to 34-15. The Kohawks shot 5-of-10 in the quarter and hit 3-of-7 from long-range. The defense followed suit and kept Cornell to just two field goals as the Rams went 2-of-13 during the frame. The Rams trimmed the lead momentarily in the third quarter but again Coe owned the final minutes, scoring 11 of the final 14 points in the frame to extend the lead past 20. The Kohawks turned to their reserves in the final quarter of action and closed out the victory with ease, clinching the season sweep over the Rams.
