Petersen Registers Second Consecutive Double-Double, Women’s Basketball Completes Season Sweep over Dubuque

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team completed the season sweep over the University of Dubuque on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, defeating the Spartans 60-40. Junior Kaalyn Petersen kept up her impressive campaign in the win, registering her second double-double in a row and eighth of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Coe started the game well, opening up an early lead in the first quarter but UD fought back before the end of the quarter to stay within touching distance. The Kohawks dominated the second, outscoring the visitors 20-10 while extending their advantage to 13 at the half. The defensive pressure was a driving force for Coe in the opening half, holding the opposition to seven first-half field goals and just 29 percent shooting. The Kohawks kept up the effort in the final two quarters en route to the win, limiting the Spartans to just seven points in the third period and 11 in the final. Molly Buck was instrumental for the Kohawk offense as well, adding 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. The win moves Coe to 17-6 overall and 9-5 in the league while UD drops to 13-9 and 7-6. The 17 wins mark the most in a single season for head coach Kayla Waskow and the most for any Kohawk team since the 2014-15 season.

  • It was the perfect start for the hosts, opening the game with eight unanswered points in the first minute and forty seconds. Dubuque finally got on the board around the seven-minute mark, hitting one free throw to get into the game. Coe extended the advantage over the next few possessions, getting back-to-back layups from Kaalyn Petersen and Ellie Wisner who combined to give the Kohawks a 12-3 lead. UD stormed back in the final four minutes of the quarter, ending the period on a 9-3 stretch to close the gap to just three points after 10 minutes.
  • The Kohawks again dominated the opening part of the second quarter, scoring the first eight points of the frame to reestablish an 11-point lead with seven minutes left in the half. UD finally settled in following the run, trading blows with the Kohawks during the next two minutes. The Spartans slightly edged Coe during the span, outscoring the hosts 6-5 to pull within six points. The Kohawks buckled down and took control of the game before the end of the half, outscoring the visitors 7-4 to grab a 13-point lead at the break.
  • Both teams struggled to start the third quarter, combining for three minutes of scoreless action. UD finally broke the skid with under seven minutes left in the quarter, hitting a 3-pointer to pull itself to within 10 of Coe's lead. The Kohawks put their foot on the gas pedal over the next few minutes, ripping off seven unanswered points to extend the lead to 17. The squads then traded scoring runs before the end of the period, however, Coe ended the third with six-straight points to lead 48-29 heading into the fourth. Coe put the contest out of reach during the first half of the fourth, putting together a 10-5 scoring run to extend the advantage to 24 points with 4:17 remaining. UD continued to fight over the final five minutes of the quarter, ending the game on a 6-2 run but Coe's lead was far too large to overcome.
