ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents on Sunday, suffering 9-0 defeats to #19 Southwestern and #36 Occidental. Coe hung tough with its two opponents despite the uneven score lines, forcing both the Pirates and Tigers to bring their top performances to the table. Southwestern and Coe were neck-and-neck in doubles but the Pirates took a 3-0 lead after a pair of close victories and one big win. Southwestern finished off the victory in singles competition, winning all but one match in straight sets. The Kohawks fell behind during doubles again in the second match, seeing the Tigers claim an 8-5, 8-3 and 8-7 victory, taking the final match in a tiebreaker to sweep the competition. Occidental secured the victory in singles with a dominant performance, dropping just two sets while securing wins at all six positions. With the losses, Coe drops to 6-4 while Southwestern and Occidental improve to 6-1 and 7-2 respectively.
