TUCSON, Ariz. - The Coe College softball team has gone 3-1 in its opening four games of its spring break trip to Arizona, picking up wins over RIT, Dickinson and UWL while dropping its lone matchup against #16 Concordia (Wis.). Coe brought the bats to the opening game of the trip, scoring eight runs in a dominant victory over RIT. The Kohawks benefited from a strong pitching performance in game two from
Ellie Thurow who limited Dickinson to just two hits and one unearned run. Coe's offense dominated the initial game on day two of the trip, racking up nine hits and eight runs in the win.
Hannah Ausenhus was nearly perfect in the game, recording a five-inning no-hitter while striking out four batters. It was a tightly contested affair in Coe's final game of day two as the game was tied at one after seven. Concordia pulled out the victory in extras, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to come out on top. With the results, Coe improves to 8-2 overall.
COE 8 - RIT 0
Game Facts
- Coe scored its first run of the game in the top of the second as Shaylee Dodd tripled to score Madi Parson. The Kohawks blew the game open in the fourth, scoring four more runs on five hits. Dodd picked up another RBI, driving home Coe's second run with a single. Keera Ball joined the party one batter later, making it 3-0 with the team's third single of the frame. Ball came around to score later on a sacrifice fly from Nicki Wood, increasing the lead to four. Ruby Kappeler put the icing on the cake two at-bats later, giving Coe a 5-0 lead with an RBI triple.
- The Kohawk bats continued to pile on in the final few innings of the game, scoring one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Coe's sixth run of the game came from Bree Mangelsen who doubled for her eighth RBI of the season. The final two runs came in the seventh, getting an RBI double from Maggie Strupp before scoring the eighth run on a Tiger error.
COE 2 - DICKINSON 1
Game Facts
- Dickinson jumped ahead early in the second game, scoring the opening run of the game in the first inning after a Kohawk error. Coe quickly responded with a single run in the bottom of the first, getting an RBI single from Mangelsen who drove home Heather Boeckenstedt. The final run of the game came two innings later as Nicki Wood put her team ahead for good with a solo homer to left field.
- Ellie Thurow was dominant throughout the game for the Kohawks and continued after she got the lead. The senior retired the side in the top of the fourth and fifth innings and worked her way out of a jam in the sixth, pitching a scoreless inning despite a leadoff single. She returned to the circle in the top of the seventh, working a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win for Coe.
COE 8 - UWL 0 - FIVE INNINGS
Game Facts
- The Kohawk bats exploded in the bottom of the first inning, grabbing a big lead with four runs. Boeckenstedt scored the initial run on a passed ball and Parson made it 2-0 with a triple to left. Marisa Vodicka continued the big inning for the Kohawks in the next at-bat, driving home Parson with a single to center. The final run of the inning came from Skyler Stookey who singled to short, pushing Vodicka across the plate.
- Coe added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, getting four hits including RBI hits from Vodicka and Stookey. Vodicka picked up a pair of RBI on a single to left field and Stookey made it eight with another two-RBI single. Ausenhus remained dominant for the final few innings of the game, allowing just one base runner on an error in the fourth inning.
#16 CONCORDIA 3 - COE 2
Game Facts
- Concordia jumped on top in the bottom of the first, registering one run on a sacrifice fly to left field. The Kohawks immediately responded in the top of the second inning, scoring the game-tying run as Vodicka scampered home following a throwing error. Both pitchers settled into the game during the next few innings, each working around a handful of jams before extras.
- The Kohawks took advantage of the runner on second in the top of the eighth inning, pushing home the go-ahead run on a fielding error by the Falcons. CUW answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to force the ninth. The Kohawks were held scoreless in the top of ninth, going down in order to give the opponents a chance in the bottom. The Falcons put pressure on the Kohawks with a one-out single and then got the bases loaded after an intentional walk. Coe got the ground ball it was looking for the in the next at-bat but the Falcons beat out the play and scored the winning run.
Up next: Coe is off tomorrow and returns to the field on Wednesday to take on RIT and Webster at 9 AM and 11 AM CT.
