Quality Pitching Efforts from Johnson & O’Donnell Lead Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of Crown

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College baseball team got a pair of excellent pitching performances from Tyce Johnson and Ethan O'Donnell in a doubleheader sweep of Crown College on Friday as the Kohawks defeated the Polars 11-4 in game one and 4-3 in game two. Coe took an early lead in the opener, scoring multiple runs in the first three innings. Joey Sartain capped off the big start with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning, helping Coe to an early 9-0 lead. Johnson gave up two runs in six innings, scattering eight hits en route to his second win of the year. The Polars scored a run in the first inning of game two but the Kohawks quickly answered with four in the bottom of the first including a three-run triple from Tyler Elliott. O'Donnell allowed two runs in the third but settled in throughout the rest of the game and turned it over to Austin Divello who picked up his second save of 2023. Coe improves to 7-4 with the sweep and Crown drops to 6-6.

COE 11 - CROWN 4
Game Facts
  • Coe wasted no time in the first game, scoring three runs on two hits and one Crown error in the opening frame. Mitchell Eckardt, who finished with four hits, led off with a single and was moved to second on a base hit from Tyler Bayless. Coe loaded the bases later in the inning and saw all three runners score on one play as Crown's error allowed the Kohawks to grab a 3-0 lead.
  • Coe struck again in the second, getting three more hits and two runs to extend the lead. James VanHooser and Eckardt recorded a pair of one-out singles and later scored on an RBI single from Jake Brosius. The advantage grew to nine in the third and put the game out of reach, getting three more hits. Jack Allison and Creighton Kreshel walked to start the inning and strolled home a couple of batters later as Sartain blasted a three-run shot to give Coe an 8-0 lead. Brosius picked up his third RBI of the game later in the inning, producing a sacrifice fly to score VanHooser who had singled earlier on.
  • Crown got a pair of runs in the fifth, using a lead-off single and a homer to gain a small amount of momentum. Some defensive issues got Coe into further trouble into the inning but Johnosn worked out of the jam. The Kohawks added an insurance run in the sixth and seventh, extending the lead to 11-2. The Polars got two runs in the bottom of the seventh, recording a pair of two-out RBI but Michael Bonner recorded the final out for the win.
