Softball Falls to WashU, Defeats Illinois Wesleyan in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, dropping a 4-2 decision to WashU in the opening game before defeating Illinois Wesleyan 4-3 in the afternoon contest. The Bears took an early lead in the first game of the day, getting one run in the bottom of the first inning. Coe immediately answered, tying the game in the bottom of the second but WashU scored the next three runs to cement its lead. The Kohawks threatened in the top of the seventh, getting a homer and a few one-out base runners but the Bears stranded the runners and took home the victory. It was another tight affair in the second game of the day with both Coe and Illinois Wesleyan scoring early. The Titans opened the scoring in the top of the second, pushing two home to grab the lead. The Kohawks answered with runs in each of the next three innings, scoring one in the second and third and two in the fourth. The game went scoreless for the next two innings until the seventh when the Titans threatened Coe's lead. IWU drew one run closer on a wild pitch but Coe's starter Ellie Thurow escaped the jam and locked down the win. The results move the Kohawks to 3-1 on the season while WashU and Illinois Wesleyan move to 1-0 and 1-3 respectively.

  • Coe was retired in order to start the game, setting the stage for the hosts in the bottom of the frame. WashU put its first two runners on, getting a single and a walk to put early pressure on the Kohawks. The Bears got on the board one batter later, scoring the opener on a one-out RBI single. The Kohawks quickly responded in the top of the second, getting a two-out double from Keera Ball who drove home Addie Menke to knot the score at one.
  • Coe had another chance to score in the top of the third, attempting to tag from third on a fly out to center field but a strong throw from the Bears cut down the run and ended the inning. The hosts capitalized on the momentum in the bottom of the third, getting back-to-back one-out hits including an RBI-double to go up 2-1.
  • Both teams went quiet over the next few innings but the Bears added insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of two-out RBI. Coe threatened in the top of the seventh, getting a one-out homer from Bree Mangelsen to slice the deficit to two with numerous at-bats remaining. The Kohawks put two runners on during the next two plate appearances but a strike out and groundout ended the chances of tying the game.
