MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team suffered a 9-7 defeat at Cornell College on Tuesday evening in the final contest of the 2022-23 Bremner Cup competition. The Kohawks grabbed an early lead in the first but then fell behind as the Rams scored four in the third. Coe clawed back to tie the game, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the fifth however the Rams answered with one to regain to lead before the sixth.
Kaden Haller tied the game with two outs in the top of the sixth, hitting his first-career homer over the left-field fence. Cornell took the lead for good in the seventh, getting five hits and four runs while taking advantage of two Kohawk errors. Coe refused to go quietly, getting two runs in the top of the ninth but the visitors left the bases loaded, striking out in back-to-back at-bats to fall to the Rams. With the loss, Coe drops to 13-11 overall while Cornell improves to 12-9.

- Coe got things started right from the jump, taking advantage of a leadoff triple from Mitchell Eckardt. Eckardt scored the opening run just two batters into the game, coming home on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Guns. Cornell responded in the third, scoring four runs on four hits and three free passes. The hosts scored three of the four runs with two outs, getting a pair of RBI hits to grab a multi-run lead.
- The Kohawks had an answer in the fourth, getting a leadoff double from Creighton Kreshel who later came around to score on an RBI groundout from Daniel Hawes. Coe continued to claw back in its next inning, getting tying the game with two runs as Jake Brosius picked up an RBI single before scoring on a wild pitch.
- Cornell again responded in the bottom of the inning, getting the go-ahead run on a wild pitch with two outs. Haller picked up his team in the top of the sixth, blasting his first collegiate homer to left to tie the game and breathe new life in the Kohawks. The Rams quickly regained the momentum, scoring four runs on five hits and two Coe errors in the seventh. Again, the Rams did their damage with two outs, scoring three of the four runs with two gone in the frame.
- Coe threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs after one hit and two hit batters but a groundout ended any chance to slice into the deficit. The Kohawks continued the fight in the ninth, getting a pair of runs on three hits but back-to-back bases-loaded strikeouts ended the game as the Rams secured the final victory of the 2022-23 Bremner Cup series.
Up next: Coe continues its road stint with a three-game weekend series at Buena Vista this upcoming Friday and Saturday. The Kohawks will take on the Beavers in a single game on April 14 at 6 PM before a doubleheader on April 15 at 1 PM.
