Hawes’ 11th-Inning RBI Gives Baseball Series-Opening Win at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team needed extra innings but secured a series-opening win at Simpson on Saturday, defeating the Storm 4-3 in 11 innings at McBride Field. Daniel Hawes delivered the go-ahead run in the top half of the inning for Coe, registering a two-out single that pushed home Tyce Johnson for the eventual game-winning run. Prior to the late drama, Coe got a solid pitching performance from Ethan O'Donnell who went six innings, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits and two strikeouts. Adam Severson earned the win for the Kohawks out of the bullpen, working two-plus scoreless innings while holding the Storm hitless in seven at-bats. The win is Coe's second straight and moves the squad to 15-14 overall and 7-9 in the A-R-C while Simpson drops to 14-18 and 4-12 in the league.

Game Facts
  • Simpson had a strong start to the series opener, getting a pair of RBI in the first inning to quickly jump ahead. The Storm responded to the strong start with a dominant opening on the mound, keeping Coe hitless across the first five innings as the hosts led 2-0 heading to the sixth.
  • Coe finally put its first hit on the board in the top of the sixth with two down as Jack Allison singled to left field. Jake Brosius quickly followed and put runners on the corners, delivering a single to right-center before stealing second. Reid Rausch walked in the next at-bat to load the bases with two gone. Tyler Elliott drew another walk in the following plate appearance however, the ball got away from the catcher on the fourth ball, allowing another run to score as Coe tied the game at 2. The Kohawks put more pressure on the defense one batter later, putting on the double steal which saw Elliott swipe second and Rausch score on an error from the Storm.
  • Simpson tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, capitalizing on a leadoff hit batter with a one-run single two batters later. The Storm threatened to add the go-ahead run later in the frame, getting a runner to third but Coe cut down the runner on a double steal attempt.
  • Coe was the first team to record a hit in extras, getting a two-out double from Johnson in the 11th. Kevin Lamb walked one batter later before Hawes was sent to the dish for a pinch-hit chance. The Kohawk senior cashed in on the opportunity, delivering a single through the left side which allowed Johnson to score for the go-ahead run. Severson, who escaped a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth, returned for the final three outs of the game and worked a perfect 1-2-3 frame to secure the victory.

Up next: Coe is back in action tomorrow afternoon for the final two games of the series, taking on the Storm in a doubleheader at 1 PM.
