No. 17 Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 20 Central

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The No. 17 Coe College softball team dropped a pair of American Rivers Conference games on Saturday to no. 20 Central College, falling 2-1 in game one before dropping an 11-4 decision in game two. Coe and Central each recorded five hits in the opening game but the Dutch scored two runs in the top of the third and got an excellent pitching performance from their starter in the win. The Dutch offense took off in game two, scoring once in the first inning and six times in the third to take early control. Coe fought back with three runs in the fifth including a two-run shot from Skyler Stookey but Central found more insurance in the sixth and seventh en route to the sweep. With the losses, Coe drops to 29-7 overall and 11-3 in the A-R-C while Central improves to 29-5 and 10-2 in league action.

  • Coe took an early lead in the opening game, getting a solo homer from Shaylee Dodd in the second inning to jump ahead. Central quickly answered in the top of the third, taking advantage of a leadoff baserunner with a two-out double which scored the visitors' lone runs of the game.
  • Coe threatened in its half of the third, getting runners on first and second with two down but Central got the shutdown inning with a flyout to end the chance. Coe put pressure on the Dutch again in the seventh, getting runners on first and second after an intentional walk but a two-out lineout to third base gave Central the win in game one.

  • Central's offense showed up early in the second game, scoring one in the first and six in the third on four hits and one Coe error. The Dutch scored the opener on a two-out bunt single in the first before exploding in the third. Central scored its first run on a fielder's choice and later capitalized on an error from Coe, delivering three more runs following the miscue. The Dutch added to their lead in the fifth, getting another two-out RBI to make it 8-0.
  • Coe showed signs of life the in the bottom of the fifth, slicing into the lead with three runs on four hits. Ruby Kappeler doubled with one out and was immediately driven in by Stookey who blasted her team-leading 11th homer of the year. Bree Mangelsen picked up Coe's third RBI of the inning, driving home Shaylee Dodd with a two-out single to make it 8-3. 
  • Central responded and pulled away for good in the top of the sixth, getting two runs on two hits. Both runs were scored again with two outs with the Dutch producing a pair of RBI singles to make it 10-3. Stookey answered for Coe in the bottom of the inning with another RBI, driving home Marisa Vodicka on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. The Dutch would add one final run in the seventh, getting an RBI single to end the scoring at 11-4. 
 
Up next: Coe returns to the field one final time in the regular season, hosting Buena Vista on Friday, May 5 at Clark Field in an American Rivers Conference doubleheader at 2 PM.
