CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Seven Coe College softball players were honored by the American Rivers Conference on Thursday, earning spots on the league's all-conference teams that were announced in the postseason awards release.
Ruby Kappeler and
Skyler Stookey were named first-team performers while
Hannah Ausenhus, Heather Boeckenstedt, Bree Mangelsen, Ellie Thurow were all named to the second team.
Marisa Vodicka completed the all-conference selections for Coe, earning a spot on the honorable mention squad. Head coach
Jake Koolbeck and his staff were also recognized by the league, earning the A-R-C's Coaching Staff of the Year award. Luther secured the remaining major awards in the postseason release as Abby Spore and Kendra Cooper were named the league's position player and pitcher of the year.
Ruby Kappeler ~ - First Team
Kappeler, a senior from Muscatine, is earning her second-career all-conference honor after a strong season as Coe's two hitter and center fielder. Ruby finished the year with a .333 batting average, recording 37 hits with a team-high nine doubles. She added three triples and a pair of homers, posting a slugging percentage of .523, fourth-best on the team. In conference play, Kappeler hit .375 with an OPS of 1.047 which both ranked inside the top 11 of the A-R-C. Ruby was also second in the league in steals, going a perfect 6-of-6 in conference play.
Skyler Stookey # - First Team
Stookey, a senior from Solon, earned an at-large selection to the first team for her second all-conference honor at Coe. The league's top power hitter recorded eight dingers in A-R-C play while also leading the conference in RBI with 19. She led the league in slugging percentage at .896 and was top 10 in batting average, on-base percentage, walks and runs scored. The Kohawk designated player and catcher had seven multi-hit games during the conference season including one three-hit performance against Wartburg.
Hannah Ausenhus % - Second Team
Ausnehus, a Central Springs native, ends her Coe career with her second all-conference honor. The senior was a dominant force in the circle for the Kohawks, posting an 11-3 record in 18 appearances and 14 starts. She finished the year with a 2.36 ERA, adding two saves and 12 complete games. Ausenhus surrendered just 32 earned runs in 95 innings during the year, giving up just 20 extra-base hits to nearly 400 batters. Hannah made six starts in A-R-C play and posted a 4-2 record, earning wins against Nebraska Wesleyan, Dubuque, Luther and Buena Vista.
Heather Boeckenstedt ! - Second Team
Boeckenstedt, a senior from Edgewood, is earning her second-consecutive all-conference selection. Coe's shortstop and leadoff hitter was one of the most consistent offensive players all year, leading the team with a .382 batting average and 50 hits. The senior set the table all season long for the Kohawks, posting an on-base percentage of .456 with 14 walks. Heather was also one of the league's best defensive players, finishing with a .957 fielding percentage at short. Overall, Boeckenstedt was second in the league in runs scored, third in steals while ranking top 20 in the league in on-base percentage and hits.
Bree Mangelsen - Second Team
Mangelsen, a junior from Charlotte, is picking up her first all-conference honor after playing a crucial role as a designated player and catcher for Coe. She finished the season with a .331 batting average, racking up 39 hits and 34 RBI during the 2023 campaign. Bree was one of Coe's most potent power hitters, totaling six homers and six doubles for a slugging percentage of .551. The junior posted a .357 average in conference play, adding eight walks to just six strikeouts.
Ellie Thurow @# - Second Team
Thurow, a senior from Woodstock, Illinois, led Coe's pitching staff in 2023 while securing her second all-conference honor. The former A-R-C pitcher of the year made 19 appearances for Coe, starting 15 games. Thurow posted a 13-3 record with a 1.28 ERA, the lowest mark among A-R-C pitchers. The Woodstock native tossed nearly 100 innings during the year and held opponents to a sub-.200 batting average. Ellie also added two saves on the year while surrendering just 19 earned runs and less than 20 extra-base hits.
Marisa Vodicka - Honorable Mention
Vodicka, a Schaumburg native, is one of just three freshman to earn all-conference recognition in 2023. Thrust into a starting role early on due to injury, Vodicka wasted no time, finishing her inaugural season in Cedar Rapids with a .297 batting average while adding nine doubles and five homers. Marisa, who is Coe's first all-conference freshman position player since
Megan Weber in 2018, was top 20 in the league in slugging percentage, RBI, doubles and homers.
Jake Koolbeck & Staff - A-R-C Coaching Staff of the Year
Koolbeck and his staff led Coe to one of its best regular seasons of all-time in his first season in charge of the Kohawks. The long-time top assistant was promoted in the Fall of 2022 to lead the program to its seventh A-R-C regular season title and second in three seasons. Koolbeck's team was 31-7 in the regular season en route to the league title, reaching a ranking of 18th in the NFCA DIII poll during the year. Under his direction, Coe led the league with a 2.20 ERA and was second in slugging, on-base percentage, runs and hits.
