MARSHALL, Texas - The Coe College softball team suffered its first defeat at the 2023 NCAA DIII National Championships on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field, dropping a 9-2 decision to third-seeded Trine. The Thunder, who forced an if-necessary game, staved off elimination for the third day in a row. Trine opened the scoring with a two-run homer two batters into the game and added another tally in the top of the second. The Kohawks got on the board in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from
Keera Ball. Coe pulled within one later in the fifth inning as
Skyler Stookey delivered her third RBI double of the tournament. Trine restored a multi-run advantage in the sixth and later added five more in the seventh, padding its lead which it maintained. The if-necessary game which was scheduled for this evening has been postponed to tomorrow, Monday, June 6 at 11 AM.
TRINE 9 - COE 2
Game Facts
- Trine wasted no time in the top of the first, getting a leadoff double before a two-run homer to take the early lead. The Thunder added another run in the second to pad their lead, taking advantage of a Coe defensive miscue to grab a 3-0 advantage.
- Coe responded in the home half of the second, getting three hits and one run to settle into the game. Bree Mangelsen led off with a single and was replaced by Rylee Newhard on the bases. The Kohawks moved Newhard to second in the next at-bat, giving Ball an RBI opportunity which she took, singling to left center to drive home Newhard. Coe later had runners on second and third after a single from Heather Boeckenstedt but Trine eliminated the threat with a strikeout following a pitching change.
- Coe pulled closer in the bottom of the fifth, adding one run on two hits to slice the deficit to one. Boeckenstedt led off with a single and later came around to score on a double from Stookey who smoked her third double off the wall of the tournament. Trine quickly restored a multi-run advantage in the top of the sixth, answering with one run on one hit and one free pass. The Thunder utilized a one-out hit batter and later moved the runner into scoring position before a run-scoring single to center.
- The Kohawks put a runner on base in the bottom of the sixth with a walk from Marisa Vodicka, bringing the tying run to the plate but again Trine avoided any damage and kept its lead intact. The Thunder added more insurance in the seventh, scoring five runs on just one hit and another defensive miscue from Coe. The Kohawks put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh, using a pair of singles to put two on but the gap was far too wide to overcome as Trine forced the if-necessary contest.
Up Next: The Kohawks and Thunder will play the if-necessary game at 11 AM tomorrow Monday, June 5 in Marshall.
