MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team pushed #17 Cornell to the brink on Wednesday afternoon but fell just short, falling 3-2 to the Rams at the Small Athletic and Wellness Center. Cornell and Coe split the opening four sets, each dominating their respective set victories. The Rams had a strong start to the decisive fifth set, taking an early 4-0 lead before a Kohawk timeout. Coe continued to battle getting within two points of the lead but Cornell scored seven of the final 11 points to ensure the five-set victory.

GAME FACTS
- Cornell took the opening set 25-23, narrowly edging Coe thanks to a strong .278 attack percentage. Coe hit .229 in the frame but recorded four fewer kills than the hosts, falling behind 1-0.
- The Kohawks responded well in the second period, racking up 16 kills and a .244 attack percentage. The Rams hit a solid .205 in the set but committed five errors as the visitors knotted the match at one.
- Coe struggled on offense in set three, hitting just .146 with 10 kills and four errors. Cornell took advantage, racking up 15 kills and just four errors with a .250 attack percentage.
- The Kohawks quickly bounced back in the fourth period with their best set of the night, hitting .406 with 14 kills and just one error. Cornell, which hit just .162 in the fourth set, came back with vengeance in the final set, hitting .240 with nine kills and only three errors. Coe managed just three kills in the final set and had four errors, dropping the match 3-2.
Up next: Coe returns to tournament play this weekend in Dubuque, facing Saint Mary's, St. Olaf, Gustavus and Westminster at the Loras Invitational on September 15 and 16.
