Volleyball beats Saint Mary's & St. Olaf on opening day of Loras Invitational

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins on the opening day of the Loras Invitational on Friday, sweeping St. Mary's and St. Olaf. The Kohawks began the tournament action with their best offensive game of the season, hitting a team-best .273 in a dominant 3-0 victory. The Cardinals scored over 20 points in only the first set, reaching 21 before posting 17 and 11 in the final two. Coe stayed hot in its second match of the evening, hitting .236 as a squad while holding St. Olaf to .149. The Kohawks cruised to a 25-15 win in the opening set before a narrow three-point win in set two. Coe completed its second sweep of the day in the third set, forcing eight Ole errors in a 25-19 win.

GAME FACTS
  • Coe opened the match with an impressive offensive display, racking up 15 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Coe again had double-digit kills in set two, posting 12 kills at a .235 clip. The Kohawks secured the sweep in the third set thanks to self-inflicted wounds from the Cardinals who had seven attacking errors in the frame. Five Kohawks recorded at least five kills in the match while Shelbi Hazlitt led the team with seven. Kelsey Hansel recorded five service aces in the match, helping Coe reach a new season high with 14 total.

GAME FACTS
  • The Kohawks again started the opening set on fire, hitting .306 with 15 kills and just four errors. St. Olaf fought back in the second period after struggling in the first, posting 13 kills but Coe edged the Oles with 15 kills and another strong attacking percentage of .286. The Kohakws benefited from more sloppy play from the opponents in the third and final set, earning a 25-19 victory despite totaling just nine kills and four errors. Maggie Furlong and Hansel both reached double-digit kills in the win, posting 13 and 10 respectively.
 
Up next: The Kohawks will complete competition at the Loras Invitational tomorrow with two more non-conference matches, taking on Gustavus and Westminster at 12 PM and 2 PM.
