CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's soccer team opened its 2023 at home on Saturday, suffering a 1-0 defeat to in-state foe Grinnell College at Clark Field. Grinnell started the match on the front foot, recording four shots in the opening 11 minutes. The Pioneers found the back of the net in the 21st minute, capitalizing on an initial shot that hit the post and rebounded to an attacker with an open net. Coe fought back in the remainder of the opening half but its best opportunity came up empty as
Ella Weber struck the crossbar in the 33rd minute. The Kohawks continued to pile on the pressure in the second half in search of an equalizer but the Pioneers saw out the final 45 minutes to claim the victory.

GAME FACTS
- Mac Adams, Ella Weber and Lilly Monroe played all 90 minutes for the Kohawks. Monroe made five saves in net during her first collegiate game. Adams had a team-high four shots, registering one in the opening period before three in the second.
- Monroe's first save of the match came in the 11th minute during a flurry of shot attempts from the Pioneers. The Kohawks tallied four shots in the final 15 minutes of the first half, with attempts from Adams, Weber and Sophia Griffin.
- Coe had a strong showing early in the second half, racking up three shots and one corner kick in the opening 10 minutes. Adams became the second Kohawk to hit the crossbar during the stretch, just missing in the 51st minute. Coe earned its final corner with just under 15 seconds left to play in the game but time expired as the set piece was delivered into the box.
Up next: The Kohawks return to the pitch tomorrow for another non-conference match at Clark Field, hosting Concordia-Chicago at 5 PM.
