WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team went 1-1 on Friday evening at the Wartburg Invite, dropping its opening match 3-0 to Carthage before taking down St. Norbert 3-1. Coe ran into a tough opponent in the first contest of the night with Carthage hitting .345 in the victory. The Kohawks responded in their second match of the evening, taking down St. Norbert 3-1 behind a strong effort from
Kelsey Hansel who had a team-high 15 kills.
CARTHAGE 3 - COE 0
GAME FACTS
- Carthage began the match with a strong offensive output in the first set, racking up 14 kills with a solid .231 attack percentage. The Firebirds used a late run in the opening set, scoring six-straight points to grab a 21-15 lead and they never looked back. Coe's opposition was on fire in the second period, hitting .421 with just two errors and 18 kills. Carthage finished the sweep with another impressive attacking display, hitting .389 with 17 kills as the Firebirds won the final set 25-20.
COE 3 - ST. NORBERT 1
GAME FACTS
- The Kohawks were on fire to begin the match, registering 19 kills and just three errors for a 25-15 win. Coe hit .457 in the period en route to the early lead. St. Norbert stormed back in the second set, winning 25-15 thanks to a better offensive effort, hitting .314 with just two errors. The Kohawks managed to return to form in the third and fourth periods, hitting .314 with 20 kills in the third before hitting .200 in the final frame.
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action next Wednesday, September 27, traveling to Luther for its first A-R-C match of the season at 6 PM.
