Women’s Basketball falls just short at #12 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team saw its upset bid fall just short on Wednesday evening, falling 52-47 at #12 Wartburg College in an action-packed A-R-C matchup. Coe raced out to the perfect start on the road, scoring the first nine points of the contest to grab early momentum. Wartburg level the playing field in the second quarter, limiting Coe to just five points while scoring 10 to grab a 21-20 lead at the break. The Kohawks responded in the first five minutes of the third quarter, using another 9-0 run to start the quarter to regain a 29-21 lead midway through the period. Wartburg closed the quarter with a strong close and went on to close the door in the fourth quarter, limiting Coe to just 28.6 percent shooting in the final period. Caydee Kirkham had a game-high 19 points in the narrow loss, adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals as she played 39 of 40 minutes. Kaalyn Petersen was a rebound shy of another double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine boards.

  • Coe's hot start featured impressive shooting efforts, going 4-of-6 from the field to start the game as Petersen contributed with four early points. The Knights quickly answered during the next two minutes, responding with a 9-2 run to pull within two at 11-9. Coe maintained the lead over the final few minutes of the quarter, getting buckets from Katie Wilhelmi and Kirkham to lead 15-11 after one. Wartburg dominated the second period, holding the Kohawks to 2-of-15 from the floor for just five points. The Knights struggled offensively too, going just 3-of-14 but an additional three free throws gave them a 21-20 lead at the half. Coe raced out of the halftime break, scoring nine unanswered points as Kirkham led the charge with five points. Wartburg had another answer for Coe, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to regain a 33-31 lead with just over a minute remaining in the third. Kirkham ensured the game was tied before the final quarter, scoring the final bucket of the period to make it 33-33. The teams traded blows for nearly the entire fourth quarter, each scoring nine points across the first eight-plus minutes. Wartburg put the game away with back-to-back buckets from Jaedon Murphy, getting a distance jumper and layup on consecutive possessions.
