Women’s Basketball improves to 6-1 at home with 69-55 victory over Central

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team picked up its sixth home victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena, taking down Central College 69-55. The Kohawks outscored the visitors in all but one period in the victory, leading for nearly 90 percent of contest. Both teams started well, combining for 36 points in the opening quarter but Coe nabbed a six-point halftime lead with a strong second quarter, shooting 7-of-14 while forcing four Dutch turnovers. Central narrowly edged the hosts in the third, trimming Coe's lead to just three ahead of the final period. The Dutch took a 56-55 lead with 3:49 to play but the Kohawks dominated the closing stretch of the contest, scoring 13 unanswered points before the final whistle. Sophomore guard Caydee Kirkham scored seven of those 13 points, including a clutch 3 that started the spurt. Kirkham finished with a game-high 17 points, adding seven rebounds, two steals and two assists. Kaalyn Petersen picked up her ninth double-double and second consecutive, posting 10 points and 12 rebounds while setting a new career-high with five blocks. Ellie Wisner and Kelly Knight also finished in double-digits for Coe, scoring 14 and 11 resepcitvely while each hitting a pair of 3s.

  • Coe and Central went back-and-forth to begin the game, each scoring with ease across the first four minutes. The face-paced nature continued over the final minutes of the opening period however Coe grabbed a two-point lead heading into the second, ending the quarter on a 7-4 run. The hosts continued to push their lead in the second quarter, beginning with an 11-4 spurt in the opening five minutes. Central quickly answered, cutting the deficit to four at 36-32 with 1:05 left in the half. Kirkham restored a three-possession lead for the Kohawks with the final bucket of the half, converting a driving layup to make it 38-32 after 20 minutes. Both teams struggled in the third quarter, combining for just 19 points and six field goals in the period. The Dutch managed to cut the deficit to just one possession before the end of the third, scoring eight of the final 10 points to pull within three at 46-43. Central continued to ride the wave at the start of the fourth, ripping off a 10-5 run to take a 53-51 lead. Coe quickly ripped off a response, scoring eight of ten points as Alina Anderson, Knight and Krikham all converted clutch baskets to restore the Kohawk lead. The hosts went on to score the final 10 points in the game, holding Central to 0-of-3 while going 2-of-2 from the floor and hitting all six free throw chances.
