Women’s Basketball uses dominant second half to get past Simpson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team picked up its second-straight victory on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, defeating Simpson College 63-54. The Kohawks struggled to find the mark in the opening two quarters, scoring just 20 points while shooting less than 30 percent as a team. Coe bounced back immediately in the third quarter, outscoring Simpson 24-4 to flip the score back in its favor. The Kohawks entered the final quarter with an 11-point lead and saw out the remainder of the contest, weathering an early push from Simpson before clinching the victory at the free throw line. Coe's offense was led by Taylor Brunson, Kaalyn Petersen and Caydee Kirkham as the trio combined for 46 of the team's 63 points. Brunson had a team-high 17 points, adding three rebounds and two assists. Petersen turned in her third consecutive double-double, posting 16 points and 13 rebounds with an additional four assists and three steals. Kirkham was Coe's final player in double figures, scoring 13 points with five boards, four assists and two steals.

  • Simpson started the game on top, opening the contest with a 14-7 run in the first six-plus minutes. Coe answered before the end of the quarter, getting a 5-0 answer to cut the deficit to just two at 14-12. Simpson got the final laugh of the period, restoring a four-point lead with a layup in the final 10 seconds. Both teams struggled to find the offensive flow in the second, combining for just 21 points in the period on nine field goals. The Storm faired better in the period and managed to extend their lead, grabbing a 29-20 lead before the half. Coe picked up the tempo and energy in the third quarter and regained momentum, dominating the period en route to a 24-4 advantage. Kirkham led the charge after a quiet opening half, scoring nine points in the quarter while Petersen and Brunson added eight and five respectively. Coe held the Storm to just 2-of-9 in the period and forced seven turnovers. Simpson and Coe traded buckets for much of the fourth quarter as the hosts maintined a healthy lead throughout. The Storm put together one final surge in the final minutes, getting within seven points with 38 seconds to play but Petersen and Ellie Wisner converted some clutch free throws to luck up the victory. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks are off this weekend and return to the court on Wednesday, February 7, hosting Luther College at 5:30 PM.
