Women’s Basketball extends streak to three with 72-56 win over Luther

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team won its third consecutive game on Wednesday evening, defeating Luther College at Kohawk Arena 72-56. The Kohawks, who completed the season sweep over the Norse, surrendered 21 points in the opening quarter, trailing by four after 10 minutes. Coe dominated the next two quarters, outscoring Luther 16-8 in the second and 17-5 in the third to take a 50-34 lead into the final period. Luther regained its offensive form in the final quarter but it proved too late, with the Kohawks cruising to their eighteenth victory of the season. Caydee Kirkham scored a game-high 22 points, eclipsing 20 points for the first time in eight games. Kelly Knight turned in a season-high 14 points, shooting a blistering 4-of-5 from deep while adding two boards and two steals. Taylor Brunson was the final Kohawk to reach double-figures in the win, scoring 12 points while falling just one board short of her first career double-double with a career-best nine rebounds.

  • Coe began the game on top, building an early five-point lead as Brunson converted three buckets to help put her team in front. Luther answered with a strong spell in the following two minutes, scoring nine straight to take a 17-13 lead with 1:57 left in the quarter. Both teams added two more buckets before the end of the period as the visitors led 21-17 after one. Luther scored the opening points of the second with a 3 but Coe quickly regained control, scoring eight unanswered points which gave the hosts a 25-24 lead midway through the period. The Kohawks continued to force the issue in the final few minutes of the half, scoring eight of the final nine points to take a 33-29 lead into the half. Coe's lead grew immediately to start the second, ripping off a 13-2 run in the first three-plus minutes. Knight spearheaded the run for the Kohawks, hitting a trio of 3s to put her team up 46-31. Coe maintained its comfortable lead during the close of the third and early in the fourth, leading 58-39 with less than eight minutes to play. Luther slightly closed the gap before the four-minute mark, pulling within 15 points of Coe's lead but the deficit was too large to overcome.
