Volleyball picks up non-conference wins over North Park and Carthage on Saturday

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Coe College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday, sweeping North Park 3-0 while edging Carthage 3-2 in five sets. The Kohawks cruised to a 3-0 sweep in the opening match of the day, hitting .252 as a squad while holding the Vikings to a .142 hitting percentage. Tessa Casebolt led the offensive effort in the match, registering 10 kills while Gracie Urbatsch was a force on defense with four total blocks. Coe played from behind in it second victory of the evening, going down 1-0 to Carthage. The Kohawks battled back to win the second set 26-24 but again saw the opponents take the lead, winning set three 25-18. Coe responded in the fourth period, forcing the fifth set with a strong 25-18 victory of its own. The Kohawks completed the five-set thriller with a 15-11 decision in the clincher, fending off a late charge from Carthage to score four of the final five points.

GAME FACTS
  • The Kohawks jumped out to an early lead in the match with a strong first set, winning 25-19 to go up 1-0. Coe dominated the late portion of the period, scoring nine of the final 12 points for the early lead. North Park forced Coe to the brink in the set period, scoring three straight points with Coe serving for set point. The Vikings tied the match at 24 with the run but the Kohawks responded, getting a kill from Casebolt and an attacking error from North Park to win 26-24. Coe eased its way over the finish line in the final set, taking advantage of eight Viking errors as North Park hit just .038 in the final period. 
 
COE 3 - CARTHAGE 2
GAME FACTS
  • Carthage jumped ahead in the opening frame, outlasting Coe despite hitting -.022. The Kohawks committed 11 errors in the period and had just eight kills as the Firebirds won 25-22 in set one. Coe responded in the second set, hitting .290 with 14 kills and just five errors, using the strong attacking play to knot the match at one with a 26-24 victory. Carthage continued the back-and-forth action in the third, hitting a match-high .370 with 12 kills and two errors while winning 25-18. Coe's defense rose to the challenge in the fourth set, holding the Firebirds to seven kills and nine errors. The Kohawk attack did enough to force the fifth set, recording 12 kills while scoring three straight to end the frame. The teams went toe-to-toe in the decider, trading runs throughout. Coe build a large enough lead midway through the set, scoring four straight to make it 8-4. Carthage closed the gap to 11-10 with a three-point run but the Kohawks scored four of the final five to clinch the victory.
