Women's Basketball extends streak to five with road win at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Coe College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday afternoon at Augustana, defeating the host Vikings 68-56. The Kohawks got a trio of double-digit scorers in the victory as Taylor Brunson, Caydee Kirkham and Ellie Wisner combined for 52 of the team's 68 points. Brunson had a team-high 18 and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds while Kirkham and Winser had 17 points each. Audrie Helmrichs matched Brunson with 17 rebounds, grabbing 12 offensive boards which helped Coe to 16 second-chance points. Coe and Augustana battled back-and-forth in the opening quarter with the visitors slightly edging the Vikings 15-14. Coe pulled away further in the second quarter, holding the hosts to just 26 percent shooting while shooting 50 percent 7 from the floor and 3-of-7 from deep. Augustana hung around in the third quarter, going toe-to-toe with the Kohawks in an evenly matched quarter. Coe put the game away late in the fourth quarter, getting an old-fashioned three-point play from Kirkham to go up nine with 1:31 to play. The Kohawks converted their free throws over the final few moments, claiming the 68-56 victory.

GAME FACTS
  • Coe and Augustana traded punches in the first quarter, separated by just one point after 10 minutes. The Vikings momentarily grabbed the lead in the second, scoring five unanswered points before the seven-minute mark to go up 19-18. Coe stormed back before the end of the quarter, outscoring the hosts 12-5 over the closing minutes. Wisner spearheaded the run with five points, hitting a 3 in the final minute of the frame to give Coe a 30-24 lead. The back-and-forth action returned for the third quarter with the teams combining for 36 points and 13 field goals. The Kohawks, leading 48-42 after three, stretched the lead in the fourth, taking a seven-point lead on a Kirkham 3 with 2:42 to play. Augustana got one back at the free throw line but Coe closed the door with the three-point play from Kirkham. The Kohawks went on to hit 7-of-8 free throws in the closing stretch, icing the game for their fifth-straight win.
