Volleyball defeats Loras in five sets to claim A-R-C regular-season trophy

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College women's volleyball team picked up its second A-R-C regular-season trophy in three seasons on Wednesday evening, defeating the Loras College Duhawks 3-2. The Kohawks opened an early 2-0 lead, edging the Duhawks 25-23 in set one and 25-21 in set two. Loras fought back and knotted the match at two, securing a dominant 25-10 victory in the third before forcing a fifth set with a 25-22 decision in the fourth. The teams went toe-to-toe in the clinching set but Coe scored three straight points to pull off a 19-17 victory. Kelsey Hansel had a career-high 23 kills in the victory, hitting .266 while registering a double-double with 12 digs. Gracie Urbatsch, Maggie Furlong and Maddie Harris each chipped in with double-digit kills in the victory while Maddy Maahs was one off her season high with 58 assists. Defensively, Harris and Maahs each registered a pair of blocks while Harris had a team-high 17 digs.

  • Coe handled business in the opening set, getting a late 5-1 run to pull away from the Duhawks. Urbatsch had a set-high six kills while Furlong and Harris chipped in with four each. The Kohawks raced out to a 9-6 lead in the second set but were forced to battle as the hosts closed the gap to one at 13-12. The visitors went on to rip off a dominant 7-1 run, extending the lead to 20-13 which was enough to grab the 2-0 lead. Loras responded in a major way in set three, hitting .520 with 13 kills and zero errors to avoid the sweep. The Duhawks rode the momentum in the fourth and tied the match, holding Coe to just .148 attack percentage with nine errors as the hosts eked out a 25-22 win. The Kohawks showed composure in the final set of the evening, building an early 6-4 lead. The Duhawks called timeout and slowed the run before answering with their own, scoring seven of the next eight points to make it 11-7. Coe called a timeout of its own and settled back in, breaking the timeout with three unanswered points to pull within one. The squads went back and forth for the next run of points. Coe trailed 16-15 after two consecutive for the hosts but the Kohawks never faltered, getting a set-tying kill from Urbatsch before back-to-back kills from Hansel sealed the deal.
