Brunson leads Women’s Basketball past Monmouth with third 30-point effort in four games

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team rolled past the Monmouth College Fighting Scots in its final game of 2024 on Monday afternoon, picking up a 91-50 victory over the visitors. Sophomore guard Taylor Brunson continued her impressive scoring streak, posting her third 30-point performance in four games as she scored 33 points to pace the offense. Coe's offense was spurred on by the Linn-Mar product as the team shot a season-best 55.4 percent from the floor en route to its 11th straight victory. The hosts built an early 10-point lead at the break and never looked back, outscoring Monmouth 33-12 in the third quarter to put the game away for good. Three additional players hit double-digits to compliment Brunson's explosive effort with Taryn Kravig (14), Caydee Kirkham (12) and Josie Gehrke (10) eclipsing the mark. Kirkham stuffed the stat sheet while hitting the double-digit mark, adding seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Kelly Knight and Brunson also had fou steals each, helping Coe to 14 takeaways in the game, tying its season high.

  • Coe scored six straight to being the game, getting four early points from Brunson and a layup from Ellie Wisner. The Kohawks let Monmouth back in with an 8-6 run over the next few minutes, cutting the deficit to just four with 3:28 left in the period. The hosts controlled the closing minutes, ending the quarter with 10 of the final 14 points to go up 22-12. Brunson had eight points during the run, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 in the final 3:16. The Coe led grew in the first portion of the second quarter, ripping off a 9-4 run to start the period. Monmouth kept it close before the halftime whistle, closing the period on an 8-3 spurt to make it 34-24 at the break. The hosts pulled away in the opening 3-plus minutes of the third quarter, scoring 13 unanswered points to quickly push the lead to 23 points. Kirkham spearheaded the run to ice the game, scoring seven of the 13 points. The starters continued to handle to visitors over the next 10 minutes of game action, stretching the lead to 36 before turning over to the reserves.
