Women’s Basketball drops A-R-C Semifinal at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team fought until the final whistle but saw its season come to a close on Thursday evening at Loras, dropping an American Rivers Conference semifinal matchup 61-60 to the Duhawks. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead, outscoring the hosts 23-11 in the opening quarter. Loras slowly chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter and got back in the game in the third, using a 16-8 advantage in the third period to close the gap to 48-45 lead with one quarter to play. Coe and Loras traded punches throughout the period with the hosts leading for most of the way. Ellie Wisner hit a game-tying 3 with less than 10 seconds remaining, leveling the game at 60. Loras pulled out the win on its final possession, being awarded free throws following an offensive rebound in the dying seconds of the game. Coe's offense was led by Kelly Knight who scored 16 points and hit four of her six 3-point tries. Wisner and Taylor Brunson also joined Knight in double-figures, scoring 11 and 10 respectively.

GAME FACTS
  • Coe and Loras went back-and-forth to begin the game, but five early points from Brunson gave the visitors a 9-8 lead midway through the quarter. Loras momentarily regained a lead on a following possession 3 but the Kohawks dominated the end of the period, scoring 14 unanswered points to take a 23-11 lead into the second. Coe stretched its lead in the first five minutes of the second, edging Loras 12-7 as Knight and Kaalyn Petersen each hit 3s to help spur the run. Loras closed the gap before the end of the half, scoring 11 of the final 16 points in the period to make it 40-29 after 20 minutes. The hosts controlled the third quarter, outscoring Coe 16-8 in the period while forcing the Kohawks in six turnovers. Knight was crucial in the period keeping her team in the game, scoring six of eight points for Coe to maintain its lead before the last. Loras continued to surge in the beginning of the fourth, using an 11-7 run to take its first lead since the opening quarter. Alina Anderson answered for Coe, putting her team back in front at 57-56 with 2:05 to play. Loras was clutch over the closing minutes, converting a go-ahead layup in the final minutes before cashing in on the game-winning free throw with less than a second to play.
