ORLANDO, FL. - The Coe College men's tennis team concluded its 2024 Spring Break trip on Wednesday, wrapping up a tough non-conference slate that began on Sunday. The Kohawks played four varsity matches throughout the week and picked up wins against Hampden-Sydney and Springfield while suffering close losses to Trinity (Conn.) and the US Coast Guard Academy. The victories bookended Coe's trip with the initial win coming on Sunday against Hampden-Sydney and the final win coming earlier this evening against Springfield.
Alex Palomar, Graham Peterson, Grant Idoux, Luke Doig and
Ivan Burt-Smith each picked up a pair of singles wins during the trip while
Bryton Short and Idoux were a perfect 4-0 in doubles matches.
COE 6 - HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 3
Game Facts
- Coe got things started in doubles, winning all three matches in fairly dominant fashion with 8-4 wins at number one and number two and an 8-5 victory at number three. Ivan Burt-Smith, Luke Doig and Graham Peterson then clinched the team win in singles, claiming their matches at #2, #6 and #1 singles. Doig dropped the opening set but bounced back to earn a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision.
TRINITY (CONN.) 6 - COE 3

- The Kohawks had another strong start in doubles, getting an 8-6 victory from Ivan Burt-Smith and Jumpei Kasai at the top spot and an 8-6 win from Bryton Short and Grant Idoux at number three. Idoux went on to claim Coe's lone victory in the singles competition, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-3 at number five.
COE 8 - TRANSYLVANIA 1
Game Facts
- Coe dominated the match from the jump, sweeping doubles with ease thanks to an 8-2 decision at number one, an 8-1 win at number two and an 8-4 victory at number three. Isaac Hinze, Jumpei Kasai, Harry Hawbaker, Bode Carter and Kohen Juelfs then locked down the victory in singles, helping Coe win five of six matches for the 8-1 decision.
US COAST GUARD ACADEMY 5 - COE 4
Game Facts
- USCG got on top in doubles, winning two of three matches but Bryton Short and Grant Idoux claimed a single point with an 8-3 decision at number three. Coe would attempt the comeback in singles competition, winning three of six matches as Grant Idoux, Alex Palomar and Luke Doig claimed decisions but USCG won a three-set battle at number three to claim the match.
DALLAS BAPTIST 6 - COE 3
Game Facts
- Coe salvaged one point in doubles despite falling in fairly dominant fashion at number one and three, earning an 8-6 decision at number two with Bryton Short and Harry Hawbaker combining for the victory. The Kohawks picked up two additional points in singles with Luke Doig claiming a comeback 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 win at number one while Isaac Hinze won in straight sets at number two.
CONNECTICUT 5 - COE 4
Game Facts
- Coe battled to an early lead in the doubles competition, winning matches at number one and number two doubles. Jumpei Kasai and Kohen Juelfs picked up the remaining points in singles, wining at number three and number six respectively.
COE 8 - SPRINGFIELD 1
Game Facts
- The Kohawks dominated from the opening serve in their final match of the trio, sweeping doubles competition with ease to go up 3-0. Graham Peterson, Ivan Burt-Smith, Bryton Short, Luke Doig and Alex Palomar completed the strong performance in the singles competition, each winning their matches to conclude the Florida swing.
Up Next: The Kohawks return to Cedar Rapids for their next match, hosting Wartburg and Cornell at Clark Racquet Center on Saturday, March 23 at 9 AM and 5 PM respectively.
