DECATUR, Ill. - The #4 Coe College softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday on the first day of the Millikin Invite, taking down Hanover 9-7 in its first game before falling to host Millikin 4-3 in game two. The Kohawks racked up 12 hits in game one, scoring nine runs en route the victory.
Madi Parson, Shaylee Dodd, Heather Boeckenstedt and
Rylee Newhard each recorded two hits in the contest while Parson had a pair of RBI.
Devan Baggett got the victory in the circle, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing just one earned run and two hits. Coe suffered its first loss of the 2024 season in its second game of the evening, dropping an extra-inning contest to Millikin. The teams combined for just 13 hits overall but the Big Blue scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to come out on top.
Skyler Stookey hit a pair of homers in the loss while
Bree Mangelsen had two hits including one double.

- Hanover got the scoring started in the top of the first, scoring the opener with two outs. The Kohawks leveled the game in the second with a two-out rally of its own, getting an RBI single from Ball to score Dodd. Coe took the lead in the third as Dodd drove home Ruby Kappeler on a fielder's choice. Hanover exploded in the top of the fourth inning, getting five runs on four hits to jump ahead 6-2. The first two runs came on a one-out single just three batters into the frame before a two-out single scored three due in part to a defensive miscue. The Kohawks responded quickly, getting five runs and the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. Boeckenstedt got the scoring started with a single that turned in to a Hanover error as Ball scored all the way from second. Parson then delivered three-run triple later in the inning, clearing the bases and tying the score at six. Dodd completed the big inning with another two-out hit, driving home Parson with a single to center. Coe added a key insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI hit from Newhard, scoring Ball from second. Hanover got the tally back in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice bunt but the Kohawks put the game away for good in the home half of the frame, regaining a two-run lead on another error from the opponents.

- Millikin put runs on the board in the first and second innings, scoring once in each frame to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Stookey answered in the third with her second homer of the season, slicing the deficit to just one. The Big Blue got the run back in their half of the inning on an RBI groundout but the hosts left another runner in scoring position to end the inning. Stookey hit her second of the game later in the fifth, making it 3-2 with a shot down the left-field line. The Kohawks capitalized on a defensive miscue in the sixth and tied the game at three, scoring the tying run on a throwing error from third base. Millikin loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, setting the stage for the walk-off single which gave the hosts a 4-3 victory.
