Baseball explodes for 42 runs & 39 hits in doubleheader to complete sweep of Nebraska Wesleyan.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Coe College baseball team exploded for 42 runs and 39 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, completing the season sweep over the Prairie Wolves with a 12-3 win in game one and a 30-13 victory in game two. The Kohawks, who extended their winning streak to eight games, had 14 hits in the opener, led by freshman Jon Wille who had four hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Gavin Guns had another outstanding performance, recording three hits and three RBI including a first-inning RBI single. Jake Brosius had a team-high four RBI, recording a triple and a double. Landon Moore and Caden Richards threw well on the mound for the Kohawks to support the offensive display, allowing just two earned runs with a combined seven strikeouts. The offensive onslaught continued in game two as the visitors racked up 25 hits en route to the 30-run performance. The display, which is just the ninth 30-run performance in DIII this season, was highlighted by Brosius who was 5-for-6 with six RBI and three runs. Jack Allison drove in four runs, going 2-for-5 and tying Brosius for the team lead with his fourth homer. In total, 11 players recorded at least one RBI, with Mitchell Eckardt, Wille, Guns, Creighton Kreshel and James VanHooser posting multi-RBI games.

  • Coe got things started in the first with a pair or runs on RBI singles from Reid Rausch and Guns. Wille quickly made it 3-0 in the second with a two-out single before another Guns RBI in the third. The Prairie Wolves stopped the momentum and got one back in their half of the third on a defensive miscue from Coe, pulling to within 4-1. The Kohawks put the game away in the sixth after trading runs with NWU in the fifth. The visitors scored four runs on two hits and a pair of NWU errors, getting a bases-loaded triple from Brosius to make it 8-2. Allison drove home the final RBI of the inning with two outs, singling to left to score Brosius from third. Coe tacked on runs in the seventh and ninth innings, getting a pair of RBI hits from Wille and a one-run double from Brosius to cap off the victory.

  • The Kohawks opened with a bang in game two, scoring 10 runs on eight hits and a pair of defensive miscues from the Prairie Wolves. Eckardt, Wille and Brosius all singled to start with Brosius driving home Eckardt for the opening run. Guns later drove home a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single, extending the lead to 3-0. Coe's next run came on a poor throw from the hosts, with Rausch scoring from third. Kreshel delivered a two-run double in the following at-bat and was immediately driven home by VanHooser for a 7-0 advantage. The final runs came on a Brosius two-run double and a Rausch one-run with two-outs, putting an exclamation mark on the opening inning. The Prairie Wolves got three runs back in the home half, scoring with a pair of RBI singles and a passed ball. Coe continued the scoring in the second, getting an RBI hit from VanHooser and a Brosius. The game was fully blown open in the third with five more for Coe, getting some help with two P-Wolf errors. Austin Gomez earned one RBI with a bases-loaded single but a misplayed ball in the outfield allowed all three runners to score. Another error allowed Gomez to score later in the inning before Wille made it 18-3 with a double to right. Coe scored nine runs in the fifth to all but end the game, getting eight hits including a grand slam from Allison. Kreshel, Eckardt, Wille and Brosius added to the fun with RBI knocks to make it 27. The final three runs came in the sixth, getting RBI from Kevin Lamb, Eckardt and Wille who put the icing on the cake.
