Softball steals school-record 10 bags in game two win at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College softball team split a pair of A-R-C games on Saturday in their final conference road series of the year, falling 3-1 in the opening game before bouncing back for an 8-7 victory in game two. The Kohawks opened the scoring in game one but Luther struck back in the fourth inning with three runs to take a lead. The Norse held Coe down for the remainder of the game, limiting the visitors to just one hit in the final three innings. The Kohawks bounced back in game two, pounding out 12 hits for eight runs in the victory. The Kohawks scored five runs in the first two innings and fought off a late Luther comeback during which the hosts scored five runs in the fourth. Shaylee Dodd delivered the game-winning hit in the top of the fifth, driving home Ruby Kappeler with an infield single. Abbie White got the win for the Kohawks out of the bullpen, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing just one earned run. Ellie Thurow came in for her third save of the season, getting the final out of the game with runners on first and second. Game two also featured a school record in the stolen base department with the Kohawks swiping 10 bags to beat the previous record of nine set in 2014. Kappeler also tied the individual school record with four stolen bases, a mark recorded twice before in Coe history.

GAME ONE
LUTHER 3 - COE 1
Game Facts
  • Coe's lone run came in the top of the first, taking advantage of a Norse error to go up 1-0 as Bree Mangelsen drew a bases-loaded walk. Both teams went quiet until the fourth when Luther scored three runs via the long ball, blasting a two-run and solo shot for a 3-1 lead. Coe's final hit of the game came in the top of the fifth, getting a one-out single from Boeckenstedt but she was stranded at second after an inning-ending flyout. Luther controlled the remaining innings, allowing just one more base runner in the sixth as the hosts took the opener.

GAME TWO
COE 8 - LUTHER 7
Game Facts
  • Coe quickly responded in game two, getting three straight singles to begin the game as Madi Parson drove home the opening run with an infield knock. Skyler Stookey put a ball in play in the next at-bat and reached on an error that allowed Kappeler and Parson to make it 3-0. The Kohawks added two to their lead in the second, getting RBI from Stookey and Mangelsen to extend the lead to five. Luther got both back in the home half of the second, slicing the deficit back to three. Coe added to its lead in the fourth, getting two runs on four hits. Stookey drove home the initial run of the frame with a single to left before Marisa Vodicka drove home Stookey with a two-out single. Luther answered back in its half again, scoring five runs on four hits. The Norse reached safely in five one-out plate appearances, clawing back a pair of runs to make it 7-4. The hosts tied the game later in the frame with a pair of bases-loaded walks and an infield single, knotting the game at seven. Coe bounced back from the tough inning in the top of the fifth and regained the lead with one run on two hits, getting the eventual game-winning tally on Dodd's infield single. Luther threatened one final time in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles but Thurow came in one for the final out and induced a game-winning pop out.
